James Glasscock, a beloved and respected member of the community, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2026, . Born on August 6, 1935, in Sumter, South Carolina, James was the cherished son of Ellis and Madie Glasscock.
James led a life characterized by dedication and service, first as a devoted family man and then as a committed member of the United States Army. After graduating from high school in Sumter, he pursued higher education in Omaha, Nebraska. His sense of duty and patriotism led him to enlist in the Army, where he served with distinction for 32 years, rising from Private to the esteemed rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
In 1954, James married the love of his life, Lorretta Petroski, in their hometown of Sumter. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love and partnership, lasting an incredible 67 years until Lorretta's passing in 2021. Together, they built a family filled with love and laughter, raising their children with the same values of integrity and perseverance that defined their lives.
James was predeceased by his beloved wife, Lorretta, daughter Becky Burrell, and son Vincent Glasscock. He is survived by his son, Jim Glasscock (Becky) and son-in-law Michael Burrell. His legacy lives on through his three grandchildren: Michael Burrell (Jaclyn), James Burrell (Britany), and James Glasscock III (Carla), along with his five great-grandchildren: Jackson, Kaitlyn, Caden, Kayleigh, and Liam James.
After retiring from military service, James channeled his leadership skills and passion for nurturing into Caldwells Nursery, a family business he operated alongside his son Jim. The nursery became a well-loved establishment in the community, reflecting James's commitment to growth and beauty in all forms.
James's family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Sams and the dedicated nurses and staff at the Blue Goose for their compassionate care and support during his final days.
In honor of James's memory, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
James Glasscock's life will be celebrated in a private ceremony at a later date.
