James Frederick Hawkins Jr., a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2026, at Mayo Lake City, after a short but valiant battle with illness. Born in Hibbing, Minnesota, on May 24, 1947, Jim lived a life rich in love, dedication, and adventure, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him. Jim was the treasured son of the late James Sr. and Erlene Hawkins and shared a unique bond with his predeceased twin sisters, Susan and Mary, and brother, William. His childhood in Hibbing was filled with the warmth of family and the simple joys of small-town life. A patriot at heart, Jim served his country briefly in the US Marine Corps, an experience that instilled in him a profound sense of duty and discipline. His professional journey as a welder took him across the country, where he contributed his skills to numerous projects, most notably as part of the crew that constructed the US Steel plant in Mt. Iron, Minnesota. His craftsmanship and dedication to his work left a lasting impact in the industry and on those he worked alongside. Beyond his professional achievements, Jim was a man of simple pleasures. He found peace and joy in the quiet moments spent fishing, his line cast into the waters, as he embraced the solace and beauty of nature. He also enjoyed the occasional trip to the casino, where he relished in the camaraderie and excitement of the games. Jim's greatest pride and joy were his family. He is survived by his loving daughter, Rhonda (James) Woodman, and devoted son, Tim (Holly), who carry forward his legacy of love and resilience. His five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren were the light of his life, each holding a special place in his heart. Jim is also survived by his caring sister, Welma, and brothers, Chuck and Jeff, who will miss his laughter and wisdom dearly. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Mayo St. Mary’s campus and Mayo Care Center for their compassionate care and unwavering support during Jim's final days. Their kindness brought comfort to Jim and his family during a challenging time. A memorial service to honor and celebrate Jim's life will be held on May 16, 2026, at 12:00 PM at the Czaplewski Family Funeral Home, located at 801 7th St SE, Kasson, MN 55944. Family, friends, and all whose lives Jim touched are warmly invited to attend and share in the memories and love that define his enduring legacy. In remembering Jim, we find solace in the knowledge that he lived a full and meaningful life, touching the hearts of many with his warmth, humor, and unyielding spirit. As we bid farewell, we carry forward his lessons of love, strength, and the simple joys of life, cherishing the memories that will forever keep him alive in our hearts.
