James Fortenbury, a beloved father, grandfather, and cherished member of his community, passed away peacefully at home on June 6, 2026, at the age of 73. Born on March 30, 1953, to Helton and Lenora Fortenbury, James was a beacon of love and kindness, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. James grew up in a close-knit family and graduated from Gavit High School in 1971, where he made lifelong friendships and developed a passion for helping others. In 1973, James married the love of his life, Reda Jett, embarking on a beautiful journey of love that spanned over five decades. Together, they built a warm and welcoming home filled with laughter, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to one another. James dedicated over 30 years of his professional life as a bookkeeper at Gatlin Plumbing, where he was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his unwavering work ethic. His colleagues remember him as a trusted friend and a mentor, always ready with a listening ear and wise advice. Beyond his professional life, James was a devoted member of the Abundant Life Church of God of Prophecy for nearly 50 years. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he lived it with humility and grace. Affectionately known as the "candy man," James had a special way with children, delighting them with his warm smile and sweet treats every Sunday. His generosity of spirit and genuine kindness made him a beloved figure within the church community. James was preceded in death by his beloved wife Reda, his parents Helton and Lenora, his brother Tom, and his sister Peggy Shoemake. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his children, Eric Fortenbury (Angela), Kyle Fortenbury, and Carey Gaddis (Tom). His grandchildren, Noah Gaddis, Ethan Fortenbury, Caleb Gaddis, and Allyson Fortenbury, brought immense joy to his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them, teaching them the values of love, kindness, and perseverance. A celebration of James's life will be held on June 14, 2026, at the Abundant Life Community Church, located at 6808 Missouri Ave., Hammond, Indiana. Family, friends, and all who knew James are invited to join in honoring a life well-lived and to share memories of a man who touched so many hearts. James Fortenbury's legacy is one of love, dedication, and unwavering faith. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit will continue to inspire and guide those he leaves behind.
