It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved matriarch, James Emma Smith Grant, on February 22, 2026, at the age of 95. Emma, as she was affectionately known, was born on June 5, 1930, in the warm embrace of LaGrange, Texas, to her cherished parents, James Andrew Smith and Edna Bouldwin Smith. Her life was a testament to love, resilience, and unwavering faith, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Emma was a beacon of light and wisdom to her family and community. She was predeceased by her devoted parents, James and Edna, her two brothers, Andrew James "AJ" Smith and Isaac "Babyman" Smith, and her sister, Nobie Caldwell Ray, whom she held close to her heart throughout her life. Although they have gone before her, their spirits live on in the stories and memories she cherished and shared with the younger generations. Emma's life was forever intertwined with that of her beloved husband, Warren Gamile Grant, whom she married on October 27, 1950. Together, they created a loving home filled with laughter, warmth, and a legacy of love that will endure through the ages. Emma's nurturing spirit and unwavering devotion were the foundation of their union. A woman of intelligence and determination, Emma graduated from the original L.C. Anderson High School in Austin, Texas, in 1949, and pursued further studies at People’s Business College. Her academic achievements were a source of pride and inspiration for her family and community. Emma carried this dedication into her professional life, where she served as a custodial supervisor at LaGrange High School for over 20 years. Her commitment to her work and the students she cared for was evident in every task she undertook, and she retired in 2000, leaving behind a legacy of diligence and integrity. Emma's faith was the cornerstone of her life. At the tender age of 12, she joined the New Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Austin, Texas, where she found solace and strength in her spiritual community. Her faith guided her through life's challenges and triumphs, providing her with an unyielding sense of purpose and hope. She is survived by her loving family who will carry forward her legacy with pride: Theresa A Davis (Elder Vennie G. Davis), Gregory Smith Caldwell, Gregory Smith Jr. (TaShara Smith), Le Creea Smith, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. Each of them holds a piece of Emma's heart and will forever be touched by her profound love and wisdom. A celebration of Emma's life will take place on March 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, located at 1214 St. James Church Rd, West Point, TX 78963. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance, honoring the beautiful life of a woman whose love knew no bounds and whose legacy will continue to shine brightly through all who loved her. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Emma's memory to the New Mt. Olive Baptist Church, supporting the community that meant so much to her. Emma's family wishes to express their deepest gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this time of sorrow. Though our hearts are heavy with her passing, we find comfort in knowing that Emma is now reunited with her loved ones who have gone before her. Her spirit will continue to guide and inspire us, reminding us of the enduring power of love and faith. Rest in peace, dear Emma, knowing that you have touched countless lives and will forever remain in our hearts.
