May 26, 1942 – July 26, 2026
With heavy hearts and profound gratitude, we announce the peaceful passing of James Edward Tucker Sr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Born on May 26, 1942, in Newport News, Virginia, James was a beacon of joy and warmth, whose influence and love reached far beyond his hometown.
James graduated from Lindsey High School in 1960 and began a dedicated career at Newport News Shipbuilding, where his hard work and dedication became the foundation of his professional life. Retirement did not slow him down, as his thirst for knowledge led him to work at Gateway, and later, he found joy in connecting with people as a beloved Walmart greeter.
His life was marked by a spirit of adventure and an enthusiasm for living life to its fullest. Whether it was snorkeling, swimming with sharks, or skydiving, James embraced every opportunity to explore the world around him. His love for adventure was only rivaled by his commitment to family, as he cherished every moment spent with them.
James was preceded in death by his mother, Rosa Bell Tucker, his daughter Jacqueline Gonzales, sons Melvin Tucker, and grandsons James E. Tucker III and Jamal E. Tucker. He is survived by his devoted wife, Anita L. Tucker, with whom he shared a love story that began with their marriage on May 26, 2001. Together, they built a family filled with love, laughter, and countless memories.
He leaves behind five sons: James (Theresa) Tucker of Covington, GA, Anthony (Zena) Tucker of McDonough, GA, Marvin (Trisha) Tucker of Spokane, WA, Micheal (Nastassja) Tucker of Newport News, VA, and Eric Tucker of Newport News, VA, as well as stepsons Troy Stringer and Kennard Stevens. James was a loving grandfather to 13 grandchildren and a doting great-grandfather to 6 great-grandchildren. His close friends and a host of other relatives and friends will also deeply miss him.
Known for his quick wit and warm smile, James had an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel welcome and valued. His kindness and generosity left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him.
A celebration of James’s life will be held on August 22, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Sylvain Funeral Home, located at 2750 Highway 42, McDonough, GA 30253. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in James’s memory to the Lupus Foundation of America, an organization close to his heart.
In this hour of sadness, the family wishes to express their deepest gratitude for the overwhelming love and support shown during this difficult time. Your prayers, comforting words, and countless acts of kindness have sustained them and meant more than words can express. May God bless all of you.
James Edward Tucker Sr. will be forever remembered for his love of life, his unwavering dedication to family, and the joy he brought to everyone who had the privilege to know him.
