In Loving Memory

JAMES EDWARD SOMERVILLE, JR
August 29, 1947 — June 28, 2026
James Edward Somerville, Jr., affectionately known as "Edward," was peacefully called to his heavenly home on June 28, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on August 29, 1947, in Hurry, Maryland, Edward was a beloved son of the late James E. Somerville, Sr. and Mary E. Somerville. His life, rich with stories and love, left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Edward's journey began in the small town of Hollywood, where he grew up alongside his siblings in a close-knit family. He attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Morganza until the 8th grade before graduating from Benjamin Banneker in 1965. His formative years were spent working alongside his father and brothers in the tobacco fields and at McKay's Grocery Store. He fondly recounted tales of riding in a tractor trailer with his Uncle Ireland, delivering supplies for Dean's Lumber Co.
Though he was unable to enlist in the Army, Edward's determination led him to Job Corps, where he honed skills that would serve him throughout his career. He dedicated 32 years of service to Andrews Air Force Base, initially in the commissary, and later found his true calling as a heavy equipment operator and crane operator, retiring in 2002 after a fulfilling 30-year career.
In April 1975, Edward married the love of his life, Beatrice, in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Together, they shared 51 wonderful years of marriage, building a family filled with love and laughter. Edward is survived by his devoted wife, Beatrice, and their cherished children, Roshunda, James, and LaToya. His legacy continues through his loving grandchildren, Andrea, Aliyah, Andrew, A'mayah, Savion, and Jaydis, and his great-grandson, Jaydee. Edward is also survived by his sister Ann and brothers Pernell, Robert Allen, and Gwynn, along with an extended family and close friends who held him dear.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Eugene "Genie," sister Patricia "BB," his daughter Jasmine, and granddaughter Angelica. His memory will forever be cherished by all who knew him.
A man of varied interests, Edward found joy in fishing, crabbing, and watching NASCAR. He was a passionate gardener, often consulting with his brothers on what to plant in their gardens. His love for canning fruits and vegetables and making homemade wine is a tradition that he passed down to his children and grandchildren. Edward was a storyteller at heart, sharing tales of the past and showing his grandchildren the places that held meaning for him.
Above all, Edward loved his family. His greatest joy came from spending time with his brothers, knowing that their gatherings would be filled with laughter and good times. His warmth, humor, and unwavering love will be deeply missed.
