James Edward Oden Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2026, at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, Maryland, surrounded by his loving family. Born on August 29, 1956, in Hagerstown, James was a man whose life was filled with warmth, humor, and dedication to those he loved.
The son of the late James Edward Oden Sr. and Anna Elizabeth Oden, James grew up in a family that valued hard work and community spirit. He graduated from Smithsburg High School in 1975, and it was there that he began to forge the lifelong friendships and bonds that would be a cornerstone of his life.
James dedicated many years of his career as an ironworker with Local 16, a job that not only showcased his remarkable work ethic but also his indomitable spirit and resilience. After retiring, he found joy in becoming the familiar and friendly face behind the window at Debbie’s Soft Serve in Smithsburg, where he continued to spread warmth and kindness to everyone he encountered.
A man of many interests, James was an active member of several organizations. He was a proud Mason of Hagerstown 217, a member of the Jesters of Columbia, the Shriners, and the South Mountain Rod and Gun Club. These memberships were a testament to his commitment to community service and camaraderie.
James was known for his sharp wit and playful sarcasm, a characteristic that endeared him to family and friends alike. His ability to pick on others with affection was his signature way of expressing love and creating connections. This humor was often accompanied by a twinkle in his eye and a warmth that made everyone feel special.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Debra Oden, whose partnership and love were the foundation of his life. Together, they raised two wonderful daughters, Jamie Weaver and her husband Joshua Weaver, and Kristi Carraway and her husband James Carraway. James was a proud grandfather to five cherished grandchildren, whose laughter and joy were among his greatest delights. He also leaves behind his sister, Lori Poster, and her husband, and his brother, Michael Oden, all of whom shared in the fabric of his life.
James’s departure leaves a void in the hearts of many, but his legacy of love, laughter, and dedication will continue to inspire and comfort all who knew him. His life was a testament to the power of humor and love in bringing people together, and his memory will live on in the countless stories and fond remembrances shared by those he touched.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date to honor James’s remarkable journey. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in James’s name to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, an organization close to his heart.
James Edward Oden Jr. will be remembered fondly and missed dearly, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
