James Edward Brown

It is with heavy hearts but profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of James Edward Brown, who departed this world on June 23, 2026, at Miami Valley Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on August 22, 1944, in Kelten, South Carolina, James embodied strength, resilience, and a deep commitment to his family and faith throughout his 81 years.
James was the beloved son of the late Edward and Curtis Brown and was predeceased by his devoted wife, Maire Brown, with whom he shared a beautiful life and raised their cherished daughter, Laretha Brown. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Donald, Bobby, Kenneth, and Michael Brown; sisters, Shirley Brown and Marian Rogers. Yet, James's spirit and legacy live on through his daughter Laretha, his loving sister Susie Hawkins, his granddaughters Donyelle and Donteja Brown, and his two great-grandchildren. His memory will also be cherished by his nieces, Karen, Jackie, Debra, Valerie, and Veronica, as well as nephews Jevarik Rogers and Gerard Hawkins,alongside a host of cousins, friends, extended family, and dear associates.
James was a dedicated and hardworking man, having devoted 49 incredible years to Houser Asphalt Company. He was a respected flat top roller who took pride in his work, traveling to various towns for contracts and never shying away from the demands of the job, whether under the blazing sun or in the pouring rain. His unwavering work ethic and determination to provide for his family served as an inspiration to all who knew him.
A man of great faith, James accepted Jesus Christ as his savior and was a committed member of Rock Hill Baptist Church in Dayton, Ohio. Even during the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, he found solace and strength in the morning prayer phone line, which brought the community together in spirit.
James found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid reader, always seeking knowledge and education through the pages of books and newspapers. He enjoyed crossword puzzles from the Dayton News, national race car events, and classic television shows like "The Three Stooges." These interests, combined with his warm and kind nature, brought smiles to those around him.
The family of James E. Brown wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone for their presence, visits, gifts of love, prayers, and words of comfort during this difficult time. Special thanks to their neighbors and Rev. Frank Adkins, whose unwavering support and fervent prayers have deeply touched their hearts.
A celebration of James's life will be held on July 6, 2026, at 11:00 PM at Thomas Funeral Home, located at 4520 Salem Ave, Dayton, Ohio, 45416. For those unable to attend in person, a livestream will be available through Thomas Funeral Obituaries.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in James's memory to a charity of your choice, honoring his legacy by contributing to causes that foster community and support those in need.
