It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved James Earl Wortham, who departed this life on April 1, 2026, at the age of 71. James left this world peacefully, surrounded by the love and warmth of his cherished family, in the comfort of his home. James Earl Wortham was born on June 8, 1954, in the quaint town of Oxford, Mississippi, to the late James Allen Wortham and Mary Louise Thompson Wortham. James led a life of dedication, love, and service, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy Wortham, and his son, Roderick Haralson, whose memories he held close to his heart. James was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Willie Etta (Cochran) Wortham, with whom he shared nearly five decades of unwavering love and partnership. Their marriage, solemnized on April 10, 1976, in Holly Springs, Mississippi, was a testament to resilience, enduring trials and triumphs, and serving as a beacon of commitment for all who knew them. A proud graduate of Oxford High School, Class of 1972, James continued his education at Jackson State University, where he laid the foundation for a life characterized by hard work and perseverance. He dedicated 16 years of his career to UPS as a truck driver, a role that exemplified his steadfast work ethic. In the early 1990s, James transitioned to an owner-operator for Rapids Delivery Service, and in 1996, he founded Wortham and Son's Trucking Inc., a family-owned business that became a source of pride and opportunity for many. James's life was enriched by his passions for the great outdoors and simple pleasures. He found solace in hunting, the tranquility of fishing, and the timeless allure of Westerns. These hobbies were more than pastimes; they were moments of joy he often shared with family and friends, fostering bonds that would last a lifetime. He is survived by his loving wife, Willie Etta, and his sons, Cedric (Jamie) of Florence, MS, and Charles (Teresa) of Pearl, MS. James's legacy continues through his seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who will carry forth his values and love. Left to cherish his memory are his two sisters, Yvonne Wortham of Oxford, MS, and Ella Wardlaw of Greenville, MS; and four brothers, Rev. Terry Wortham (Faye) of Coldwater, MS; Tony Wortham (Janice) of W. Memphis, AR; Kenneth Wortham of Oxford, MS; and Joseph Wortham (Gwen) of Jackson, MS. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family who will forever hold him dear. James was blessed with a large and loving extended family, including three brothers-in-law: Elre Cochran, Jr. of Holly Springs, MS; David Cochran (Carolyn) of Ashland, MS; and Philander Cochran (Karen) of McDonough, GA, and eight sisters-in-law: Barbara Wortham of Oxford, MS; Perley Smith, Ida Mae Brown, Sarah Moore, all of St. Louis, MO; Hannah Tunstall (Curtis) of Victoria, MS; Alice Frazier (Pete) of Memphis, TN; Inez Collier of Milwaukee, WI; and Joanner Edwards of Olive Branch, MS. Each of them held a special place in his heart. A celebration of James's life will be held on April 11, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Oxford First United Methodist Church, located at 102 Dylan Ave, Oxford, MS 38655.
