In Loving Memory

James Dwayne Lofton jr
May 10, 1993 — April 3, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved James Dwayne Lofton Jr., affectionately known to all as "Gabby." Born on May 10, 1993, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Gabby left this world far too soon on April 3, 2026, after a courageous battle with illness. Though his years were brief, the impact of his life will resonate in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Gabby was the cherished son of Melissa Hoffner and James Dwayne Lofton Sr. He was a beacon of light, illuminating every room he entered with his infectious smile, so much so that he was almost named "Cheese" for his perpetual grin. Gabby had an exceptional ability to bring joy and laughter to everyone around him, and his warmth and kindness will forever be remembered by his family and friends.
He was a proud graduate of Creston High School, where he formed bonds that would last a lifetime. Gabby’s passion for life was evident in everything he did. Known for his love of food, Gabby ensured there were never any leftovers when he was around. He cherished his family deeply, finding immense happiness in the simple joy of being surrounded by loved ones. His cousins held a special place in his heart, and he often delighted in lifting their spirits—literally and figuratively—even as they grew older.
Gabby’s love for his mother was unparalleled; she was his everything, and he loved her unconditionally. With a heart as big as his smile, Gabby was a devoted son, brother, cousin, uncle, nephew, and grandson. He is survived by his loving sisters Jamila, Jasmine, Jamie, Doretha, Phasshon, and sister-cousin Lashae; his grandparents Jennie and Darreyl; aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, and a host of cousins, all of whom will carry forward his legacy of love and laughter. He is predeceased by his paternal grandparents and his dear sister, who have surely welcomed him with open arms.
A celebration of Gabby's life will be held on April 15, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Brown’s Funeral Home, located at 627 Jefferson SW, Grand Rapids, MI 49505. Friends and family are invited to come together to honor the extraordinary life Gabby led and the profound impact he had on so many.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Gabby’s memory by embracing life with the same joy and warmth he shared, and by keeping his spirit alive through acts of kindness and love.
As we lay Gabby to rest, we are comforted by the love he left behind—love that will never fade. The family shares this special message through a heartfelt poem:
As the sunrise in the sky, the love you left will never die,
The time you spent will always be a perfect part of me,
The things we shared, the memories will always be a fact, not the past,
We will cherish your moments from now and then,
A son, brother, grandson, uncle, nephew, cousin—a friend never ends,
As we lay you to rest, we will rejoice in all the beautiful things we have within.
We will always love you near and far, till God brings us together in heart.
Gabby, you are forever cherished and deeply missed. Until we meet again, we hold you in our hearts with love eternal.
