Born on August 30, 1951, in Los Angeles, California, James led a life filled with love, resilience, and dedication to family and community. The beloved son of Larry and Helen Akemon, James lost his parents and stepson, Jamie, yet he carried their memories with him as guiding lights throughout his life. He is survived by his devoted husband, James D. Tranchina, and cherished daughter, Lindy Nicole Mejia, along with her husband, Ernie Mejia. His grandchildren, Andon Cooper Mejia and Ellis Olivia Mejia, were the apples of his eye, bringing immense joy and pride to his days. James was also fondly connected to his extended family, the Taylor and Akemon Clans of West Virginia. James's life was a testament to enduring love and commitment. He married his beloved partner secretly in San Diego, California, on Halloween, October 31st, and later celebrated their union publicly on December 31, 1987. Their marriage was a beacon of strength, especially during the challenging years of battling breast cancer. James's courage and determination were evident as he faced over 30 hospitalizations, demonstrating an unwavering spirit until the very end. An industrious and skilled professional, James graduated high school and acquired certifications as a Dental Technician and Manicurist. For 35 years, he owned and operated "The Perfect 10," a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to his craft. In addition, he contributed his skills in accounting and bookkeeping to the family chain of thrift stores. James's career journey also included a unique experience aboard the BB-62 Battleship New Jersey during a family cruise off the coast of Long Beach, California, which he embarked on as the spouse of an active-duty Navy Sailor. Beyond his professional endeavors, James was an avid outdoor enthusiast with a passion for animal husbandry. He cherished spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, creating lasting memories filled with laughter and love. In honor of his life and legacy, the family suggests donations be made to a cancer research or hospice organization of your choice, reflecting James's valiant battle and the compassionate care he received.
