James Dennis Tranchina, lovingly known as PJ, RN-RET, passed away on July 22, 2026, at the age of 74. Born on August 30, 1951, James's life story is one of resilience, service, and boundless compassion. Despite the challenging circumstances of his birth in San Diego, CA, to his mother, Mercedes Ondo, James spent his life proving his worth and making a difference in the lives of countless others. James's dedication to his country was exemplified through his honorable service in the U.S. Air Force as a Pararescueman, the most elite branch of service across all the armed forces. His courage and skill were recognized with three Air Medals, one distinguished with an Oak Leaf Cluster for heroic actions. Among his notable achievements was setting a world record for a night over-water rescue in a Sikorsky helicopter. He also flew escort on the final leg of President Nixon’s historic trip to Beijing and was on recovery alert for the last two Apollo missions. After his military service, James devoted 40 years to a career in nursing, spending the last two decades as a traveling RN and House Supervisor from Los Angeles to Lincoln, Maine. His commitment to helping others extended beyond his profession. He was an honorary citizen of Chicago for his dedication to tutoring inner-city children and was commended by the Mayor of New Orleans for his bravery in protecting students at Metairie Jr. High School. James was not only a hero but also a man of many talents and passions. He entertained as "Jasper The Clown" and stood in as "Ronald McDonald" in the Las Vegas region. His performances graced venues such as the Sahara and the MGM, and he was honored to be painted by the legendary Red Skelton. James was married to his beloved Rona Lee Tranchina for 39 wonderful years. Their love story, which began with a secret wedding on Halloween, was a testament to their dedication and resilience. Rona, a formidable woman who battled breast cancer bravely, passed away just days before James. Together, they shared a daughter, who, despite being estranged, blessed them with two cherished grandchildren, Ellis and Andon Mejia of Portland, Oregon, and a son-in-law, Ernie Mejia. James's legacy is one of love, courage, and a relentless pursuit of making the world a better place. His family invites those who knew him to join in celebrating his life and to consider donating to a charity of their choice in his memory. James's autobiography, "Adopted Instead," captures his belief that every life is precious and full of potential. Through his story, he continues to touch lives and inspire those who read it.
