James Cash Jr.
October 10, 1961 — October 1, 2026
James Cash Jr., a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and cherished member of the community, passed away peacefully at his daughter's home in Buena Vista, Virginia. Born on October 10, 1961, in Staunton, Virginia, James was a man whose life was marked by warmth, generosity, and an unwavering spirit.
James was the son of the late James Cash Sr. and Florence Craig, who, along with several aunts, uncles, and a cousin, welcomed him into the afterlife. His legacy, however, lives on through his surviving family, including his daughter Heather Chittum (Chip) from Buena Vista, daughter Amanda Wright also from Buena Vista, and son Jason Sheffer (Tammy) of Staunton, Virginia. James was a proud grandfather to ten grandchildren—Nevaeh, Christine, Krysten, J.R., Charles, Jaiden, Jorja, Kolton, Seraphina, and Jason Jr.—and a great-grandfather to Jamie and Oaklynn.
In his youth, James was a passionate race car driver on the dirt track, partnering with the late David Shover. This adventurous spirit carried over into his professional life, where he worked as a tow truck and taxi driver before dedicating his skills to Grands Warehouse in Staunton and Harrisonburg. After decades of hard work, he retired in December 2024, looking back on a fulfilling career.
James served as a firefighter in Swope, Virginia, during his younger years, embodying his commitment to helping others. He was known for his kind words, witty smile, and calming presence, which could transform a bad day into a good one in mere moments. James found joy in the simple pleasures of life, whether riding through the mountains or casting a fishing pole into the water. His generosity knew no bounds, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand or offer a word of encouragement.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Rockbridge County Hospice for their unwavering support and guidance during this difficult time. Special thanks to Dr. Vranic from Augusta Pulmonology for standing by James in his battle with lung issues, and to Missy Noel for her steadfast support and care for the family.
A private funeral ceremony will be held to honor James’s remarkable life. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in James's memory to organizations close to his heart.
James Cash Jr. will be dearly missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire and uplift all who knew him.
