JAMES BYRD JR

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved James Byrd Jr., who peacefully departed this world on June 26, 2026, in Daytona Beach FL, surrounded by his loving family and at the age of 67. Born on June 30, 1958, in the nurturing community of Anderson, South Carolina, James was a beacon of love and wisdom to all who knew him. He moved to Daytona Beach to advance in his career and made it his home. James met some phenomenal people when he moved to Florida, and they welcomed him instantly. James was the cherished son of the late James Sr. and Ernestine V. Byrd, who instilled in him the values of faith, resilience, and compassion that he carried throughout his life. He was a proud alumnus of Nettie Lee Roth High School, graduating in 1975. His career journey saw him contributing to the Montgomery County Juvenile Detention Center, Emery Worldwide, and General Motors, where he showcased his unwavering dedication and work ethic. James was not only a devoted family man but also a pillar of his community. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 48 years, Ruth, whose partnership was filled with love, laughter, and mutual respect. Together, they nurtured a beautiful family, including their six adored children: Shawnita; James Byrd III (Vadia) of Virginia; Joseph (Kreshalia) of Dallas; Eugene Scott of Anderson, Texas; Joshua; Jason of Dayton, Ohio; and Sheridan Michelle Byrd of Columbus, Ohio. James's legacy of love continues through his 13 cherished grandchildren: Sha'Bre Byrd-Barton, Derrick Barton, Eugene S Scott, Shamaria Barton, James IV, Joseph, Josiah, Amyah, Serenity, Indya, Caleb, Hazel, Khaleesi, and Amir. His faith journey began at the tender age of 19 when he accepted the Lord into his life. James was a founding member of Faith Deliverance Church of God in Christ, where he served faithfully for 45 years. His contributions were many, from teaching the Men's Class Sunday School and leading the youth in Y.P.W.W. to singing with the choir. His voice uplifted many with renditions of "Give It to Me" by Rev. James Cleveland and "What Is This" by Walter Hawkins. James's leadership extended to his role as Assistant Chairman of the Deacon Board, where his wisdom and kindness were felt by all. James's heart extended beyond his family and church community. He is survived by his two brothers, Ray Laverne Byrd of Dayton and Douglas Eugene Byrd of Washington, D.C.; his aunt, Abigail Parker; a host of loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and his godson, Robert Hunter. A special bond was shared with his special cousin, Sheryl Knight, who held a dear place in his heart. The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated caregivers, including Maggie, Tiffany, and Shannon, and the compassionate nurses at Ohio Hospice of Dayton, who provided exceptional care during James's final days. Special thanks are also extended to Minister Rodney Leigh, Alvin Dennis, Sammy Myrick, and Sheryl Carter, his fellow deacons, and longtime friends who enriched his life with their unwavering support. In accordance with his wishes, a private memorial will be held to honor James's life. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we will be having his memorial in Anderson SC. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice, celebrating James's life by giving to others in need. James Byrd Jr. leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and community service that will forever inspire those who knew him. As we mourn his passing, we celebrate his extraordinary life and the countless lives he touched with his kindness and generosity. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
