In Loving Memory

James Buhs
April 12, 1958 — March 5, 2026
James Buhs, a cherished friend, devoted father, and passionate environmental advocate, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 5, 2026, at the age of 67. Born on April 12, 1958, in Ottawa, Kansas, James lived a life rich in love, dedication, and service.
James was the beloved son of the late Helen and Robert Buhs and grew up in a family that cherished nature and education. He carried these values throughout his life, attending Kansas State University, where he graduated with a degree in Environmental Science in 1979. His dedication to the environment was evident early in his career as a park ranger in local state parks, where he nurtured a deep appreciation for the natural world.
Transitioning from park ranger to environmental consultant, James spent decades advising communities on sustainable practices, leaving a lasting impact on many neighborhoods and green spaces. Even after his retirement in 2015, his commitment to the environment never waned, as he continued to volunteer with local environmental organizations, imparting his knowledge and enthusiasm to future generations.
James was a devoted family man, marrying the love of his life, Karen Buhs (née Johnson), in 1985. Together, they built a loving home until Karen's passing in 2018. In his later years, James found companionship and joy with Lisa Thompson, who stood by his side until his peaceful departure.
He is lovingly remembered by his stepmother, Linda Buhs, his siblings, Robert and Susan Buhs, and stepsiblings, Ann and Michael Criqui. James’s legacy is further carried on by his five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as his numerous nieces and nephews who fondly recall his warmth, wisdom, and gentle humor.
James was predeceased by his parents, Helen and Robert Buhs, and grandparents, Charles and Anna Buhs, as well as Joseph and Margaret Smith. His family finds comfort in knowing that he is reunited with them in peace.
In respect of James's wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held, allowing family and close friends to gather and celebrate the life of a man who touched so many with his kindness and dedication. Although he has left this world, his spirit will forever be part of the woods he walked, the gardens he nurtured, and the hearts he touched.
Rest in peace, dear James. Your life was a testament to the beauty of caring for the earth and its people.
