It is with profound sadness and fond remembrance that we announce the passing of James B. Carroll Jr., who departed this world on July 6, 2026, at the age of 90. Born on March 4, 1936, in the close-knit community of War, West Virginia, James was the cherished son of the late James B. Carroll and Wilma B. Carroll. His life was a tapestry woven with love, dedication, and service to others.
James was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Narell C. Carroll, with whom he shared 33 beautiful years of marriage. They were wed on May 10, 1994, in Kimball, West Virginia, embarking on a journey filled with companionship and mutual respect.
A proud alumnus of Excelsior High School, James graduated in 1954 before pursuing higher education at Howard University, where he graduated in 1959. His academic achievements laid a strong foundation for a life dedicated to service and leadership.
James served with distinction in the United States Army from 1959 to 1969, earning multiple commendations including the Combat Nifty Badge, two Air Medals, seven Bronze Stars, and five Army Commendation Medals. His leadership as a Master Gunner and Company Commander for the First Medium Tank Battalion of the 3rd Armored Division in West Germany was a testament to his courage and commitment. He continued to share his knowledge as an Assistant Professor at Marshall University from 1967 to 1969, shaping the lives of many young minds.
After his military service, James transitioned to a successful career with Ink Co. in New York City, where he worked from 1970 to 1976. His professional journey was complemented by his active involvement in organizations such as Sigma Pi Phi Fortify, Kappa Alpha Psi Psi, and 100 Black Men of New York City. He also dedicated his time and leadership skills to the United Way, serving as President of Family Services across West Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio.
James's life was enriched by his passions for golf, photography, and music, pursuits that brought joy and fulfillment to his days.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and strength through his children: James Carroll III, Janice A. Carroll, Maria J. Brown and her husband Reginal Brown, Stacey M. Heath and her husband Adrien Heath, and Windell D. Heath and his wife Darlene Heath. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Darrell Walker, Sean Brown, Jordan Carroll, Scott Carroll, Bradley Heath, Evan Heath, and Donvan Heath. His joy multiplied with the arrival of his five great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his spirit and values.
James's memory will be treasured by all who knew him, including his granddaughter Morgan Spars and Taylor Heath, who were particularly close to his heart.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor James's memory may make donations to a charity of their choice, reflecting his lifelong commitment to giving back and supporting meaningful causes.
