In loving memory, we honor the life of James Alfred Potvin (aka Papa Jim), who passed away peacefully on June 19, 2026, surrounded by the warmth and love of his family. Born on September 26, 1937, in the serene town of Alpena, Michigan, Jim was a beacon of love, strength, and service throughout his 88 years.
Jim was the cherished son of Joseph and Bessie Potvin. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, his brothers Walter and Phillip, and his sister Barbara, with whom he shared an unbreakable bond. He dedicated his life to his devoted wife, Elaine Frances Potvin, whom he married on March 3, sixty-four years ago at St. Richard’s Catholic Church and settled in Garden City, Michigan.
Jim was a proud 1956 graduate of Garden City High School. He volunteered for the draft and served his country with honor, driving a tank and rising to the rank of Sergeant. After his military service, he dedicated twenty-two years of his career to Detroit Edison in fuel supply, where his hard work and dedication were evident to all who knew him.
In his retirement, Jim embraced the tranquility of Lake Tamarack, indulging in his passion as an avid l fisherman. His love for the great outdoors was matched only by his love for cooking, which he shared generously with family and friends. Known for his warm heart and tireless dedication to his family, always ready with a kind word or a hearty meal.
Jim is survived by his loving children, John and Michelle Bodary, John and Beth Ann Kastler, and Jim and Debbie Potvin. Grandchildren include Robert (Maeghan), Jaclyn (Cameron), John (Kiley), Laura (Max), James, Christian (Marilyn). His great-grandchildren, Lucy, Eli, and Alden, were frequent visitors, filling his home with laughter and fun.
Visitation will be June 23 from 3-8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. June 24. A service to celebrate Jim’s life will begin on June 24 at 10:00 AM at Santeiu & Sons, located at 1139 Inkster Road, Garden City, MI 48135. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in James's honor to Gleaners Community Food Bank or the St. Paul of the Cross Passionist Retreat Center, reflecting his generous spirit and commitment to helping others.
