November 25, 1955 — May 15, 2026

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Alfred Kearney, a cherished father, grandfather, brother, and friend. James departed this world peacefully at his home on May 15, 2026, at the age of 70. Born on November 25, 1955, in Staten Island, NY, James was the beloved son of the late Michael and Faith Kearney. James's life was a testament to service, dedication, and love. He graduated from Susan Wagner High School in 1973 and pursued higher education at the College of Staten Island and Pratt Institute, where he studied mechanical engineering. His professional journey began with the NYC Parks Department as a summer lifeguard, a testament to his passion for helping others, which ultimately led him to a distinguished career as a New York City firefighter from 1981 to 2004. During this time, James courageously served his community, becoming a cherished member of the F.D.N.Y family. A man of many talents and interests, James was the proud owner and operator of Poolside Construction Company and later D&M Utility Company. His entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to safety were further demonstrated through his work as a NYC Licensed Site Safety Manager. Beyond his professional life, James was a proud member of the Carpenters Union and Fire Riders, embodying a spirit of camaraderie and service. James married Deborah Pierce on August 16, 1980, in Las Vegas, and together they raised three wonderful children: Megan, Douglas, and Michael. Although their marriage ended in 2013, they shared a bond that continued through their children and four cherished grandchildren: James E. Rodriguez, Stephen G. Rodriguez, Theodore James Kearney, and Kahlan M. Rodriguez. James later found love with Angela Coyle, who predeceased him. James's love for life was infectious, whether he was riding his motorcycle, working on cars, or enjoying the great outdoors. His passion for sports was evident from his record-setting days on the track to his skiing adventures in Colorado. He found joy in simple pleasures: playing pool on his grandfather's table, fishing at his lake house, or sharing laughter and stories around a fire with family and friends. Known for his amazing wit, charming personality, and piercing blue eyes, James had an unparalleled ability to light up any room. A true "man's man" with a generous heart, he connected with people from all walks of life, leaving an indelible mark on everyone he met. To his children and grandchildren, he was not only a hero but also an invincible father and grandfather whose legacy will live on in their hearts. James leaves behind a loving family, including his daughter Megan Rodriguez and her husband Arnaldo, sons Douglas and Michael Kearney, daughter-in-law Marisa Lopez, his grandsons and granddaughter, brothers Joseph M. Kearney, Thomas J. Kearney, and Christopher J. Kearney, sisters-in-law Marie Kearney and Dionne Kearney, nephews Robert and John Kearney, and a vast family within the F.D.N.Y community. A service to honor James's remarkable life will be held on May 23, 2026, at 3:00 PM at John Vincent Scalia Funeral Home, 28 Eltingville Blvd. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who join in celebrating his life and legacy. In keeping with James's wishes, the family will grieve privately, cherishing the memories and stories that will keep his spirit alive. As we say goodbye to a remarkable soul, we remember James for his strength, resilience, and unwavering love for his family. He lived life on his own terms, embodying the wisdom his father imparted: "Life is hard, and once you figure that out, it gets a little easier." James will forever remain a part of us, a guiding light in our lives, and a testament to a life well-lived.
