In Loving Memory

James Alfred Kearney
November 25, 1955 — May 15, 2026
James Alfred Kearney, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, peacefully departed this world on May 15, 2026, at his home, surrounded by the warmth of family and the love he so generously gave throughout his life. Born on November 25, 1955, in Staten Island, NY, James was the cherished son of the late Michael and Faith Kearney. He was predeceased by his parents and his dear fiancée, Angela Coyle.
James's life was a tapestry of vibrant threads, woven together by his many roles and accomplishments. A devoted father, he leaves behind his beloved daughter, Megan Rodriguez, and sons, Douglas and Michael Kearney. He was a proud grandfather to four grandchildren, James E. Rodriguez, Stephen G. Rodriguez, Theodore James Kearney, and Kahlan M. Rodriguez, who were the lights of his life. His son-in-law, Arnaldo Rodriguez, and daughter-in-law, Marisa Lopez, were also close to his heart. James's legacy is further carried on by his brothers, Joseph M. Kearney, Thomas J. Kearney, and Christopher J. Kearney, as well as his sisters-in-law, Marie Kearney and Dionne Kearney, nephews Robert Kearney and John Kearney, and his extended F.D.N.Y family.
James's journey through life was marked by dedication and passion. He graduated from Susan Wagner High School in 1973 and pursued higher education at the College of Staten Island and Pratt Institute, where he studied mechanical engineering. His professional career was diverse and impactful; from serving as a summer lifeguard with the NYC Parks Department to a dedicated New York City firefighter from 1981 to 2004. He was also the proud owner of Poolside Construction Company and D&M Utility Company, and his work as a NYC Licensed Site Safety Manager was a testament to his commitment to safety and community.
A man of many talents and interests, James found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved the thrill of riding his motorcycle, working on cars, trucks, and boats, and cherished time spent with family and friends at his lake house. An avid pool player and a record-setting track athlete in his youth, he also enjoyed fishing, playing darts, and the camaraderie of the Fire Riders and Carpenters Union. James was a man who loved a good fire, a good drink, and the company of those he held dear.
James's personal qualities were as captivating as his blue eyes. His wit and charm illuminated every room he entered, and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life was a rare gift. His kindness and generosity left an indelible mark on all who knew him. To his family, he was more than a son, brother, or grandfather; he was their invincible hero, a true "man's man" with a heart full of love.
A service to honor and celebrate James's life will be held on May 23, 2026, at 3:00 PM at John Vincent Scalia Funeral Home, located at 28 Eltingville Blvd. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who join them in saying goodbye to their beloved James. They wish to honor his memory privately, holding dear the countless memories and stories that will keep his spirit alive within them.
In the words of James's own father, "Life is hard, and once you figure that out, it gets a little easier." James lived by these words, embracing life with a tenacity and vigor that inspired all who knew him. His legacy of love, laughter, and resilience will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends.
