James Alfred Kearney, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, peacefully passed away at home on May 15, 2026, at the age of 70. Born on November 25, 1955, in Staten Island, New York, James led a life filled with adventure, hard work, and an unwavering devotion to his family and community. James was the cherished son of the late Michael and Faith Kearney, who instilled in him the values of resilience and integrity. He was predeceased by his beloved fiancée, Angela Coyle, with whom he shared many joyful memories. He is survived by his loving children: daughter Megan Rodriguez, and sons Douglas and Michael Kearney. James took immense pride in his role as a grandfather to four wonderful grandchildren: James E. Rodriguez, Stephen G. Rodriguez, Theodore James Kearney, and Kahlan M. Rodriguez. His legacy of love and wisdom continues through his son-in-law, Arnaldo Rodriguez, daughter-in-law, Marisa Lopez, and his brothers, Joseph M. Kearney, Thomas J. Kearney, and Christopher J. Kearney, as well as his sisters-in-law, Marie Kearney and Dionne Kearney. He was a proud uncle to his nephews, Robert Kearney and John Kearney, and a respected member of his extended F.D.N.Y family. James married Deborah Pierce on August 16, 1980, in a memorable ceremony in Las Vegas. Together, they raised three children and built a life full of love and adventure until they parted ways in 2013. James later found love again with Angela Coyle, with whom he was engaged before her passing. An alumnus of Susan Wagner High School, James pursued higher education at the College of Staten Island and the esteemed Pratt Institute, where he studied mechanical engineering. His professional journey was as diverse as it was impressive. From his early days as a summer lifeguard with the NYC Parks Department to his dedicated service as a New York City firefighter from 1981 to 2004, James exemplified courage and commitment. He also ventured into entrepreneurship, successfully running the Poolside Construction Company and later, D&M Utility Company. His expertise extended to roles as an aircraft deicer, and a licensed site safety manager, among others. James was a proud member of the Carpenters Union and the Fire Riders, reflecting his passion for craftsmanship and camaraderie. A man of many talents and interests, James loved riding his motorcycle and working on cars, trucks, and boats. His athletic prowess as a young man set records in track, and he found joy skiing in the mountains of Colorado. Whether playing pool on his grandfather's table, fishing, or enjoying the warmth of a good fire, James cherished every moment spent with family and friends at his lake house. With a charming personality, piercing blue eyes, and an ability to connect with all people, James had a unique gift for making everyone feel valued and heard. His kindness and generosity touched countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. To his children and grandchildren, he was more than a hero—he was their guiding light, embodying strength and love. A service to celebrate James's remarkable life will be held on May 23, 2026, at 3:00 PM at John Vincent Scalia, located at 28 Eltingville Blvd. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to all who join them in honoring James's memory.
