James Alfonso Washington, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and pillar of the community, peacefully passed away on June 28, 2026, surrounded by his family and Pastor Bates in the comfort of his home. Born on April 26, 1949, in a town lovingly remembered as "Ss," James was the cherished son of Harvey Earl Washington and Joyce M. Washington. He is now reunited with his parents and siblings who predeceased him.
A devoted family man, James leaves behind his beloved wife, Sandra Washington, to whom he was married for many joyous years. Together, they raised three wonderful children: Al Junior, Tonique Washington, and Nikki Washington. James was the proud grandfather to five grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his life.
James dedicated his career to the service of others, working tirelessly within the Oakland Public Schools system. His role as a librarian allowed him to share his passion for knowledge and learning with generations of students. Additionally, his career also took him to the halls of Congress in Washington, D.C., where his influence and dedication were felt beyond the local community.
Outside of his professional life, James was a man of many interests. An avid chess player, he was always prepared for a strategic match, often teaching others the intricate nuances of the game. He was also known for his love of a good barbecue, where he would bring friends and family together over delicious food and laughter.
A service in honor of James’s life will be held on July 17, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Cornerstone Baptist Church, located at 3535 38th Avenue, Oakland, CA. Family and friends are invited to join in celebrating the life of a man who lived each day to the fullest, embodying kindness and love in all his actions.
