In Loving Memory

James A. Talley
March 6, 1943 — August 9, 2026
James A. Talley, affectionately known as "Pops," passed away peacefully on August 9, 2026, after a short hospital stay. Born on March 6, 1943, in Anniston, Alabama, James's life was a testament to love, learning, and resilience.
James was the cherished son of Effiel Lanier and Russell Talley. Though predeceased by his brother Henry David Talley and a beloved little sister, James's legacy lives on through his extensive family and friends. He leaves behind his devoted wife of over fifty years, Phyllis Talley, and their adoring children, DeJuan Talley and Shanette Oliver. His siblings Dot Goodbread, Anne Talley, Cynthia Talley, La French, and Ray Talley, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and great friends, hold his memory close. James was also a proud grandfather to four grandchildren—Jessica, Jaimie, Vincent, and Jordan—and eight great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense joy to his life.
James's journey through life was marked by his insatiable curiosity and love of learning. Known for knowing "a little of a lot," he was an avid reader and a fan of the Discovery Channel and sports. His career culminated at the Los Angeles Times, where he worked diligently until retiring in 1996, following an injury sustained during the riots. James cherished his role, always committed to public service and safety.
Outside of his professional life, James found joy in the simple pleasures. He relished taking his children to Disneyland, Marineland, and hosting Saturday night home parties. His love for music was profound, especially the timeless "legacy music" that resonated with him deeply. His grandchildren were the apple of his eye, and he treasured their adventures to the beach and McDonald's. Walks with Jessica on Sandlewood Farm were special moments, as they marveled at the transformation from a rocky terrain to flourishing gardens and fruit trees.
James and Phyllis shared a beautiful life together, often joining bowling leagues and opening their home to family members, creating a warm and welcoming environment. His Alabama roots remained deeply embedded in his heart, as did his love for his California family.
A service to honor James's remarkable life will be held at Stone Funeral Home, located at 355 East 9th Street, Upland, CA, on September 2, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice, in memory of James.
In the words of his family, "James A. Talley loved his Alabama family and his California family deeply. The treasures of his heart always shined through. His sometimes tough outer shell was a protective shield of his tender heart. Rest well papa. Job well done. Our Road Runner to the end. Now on the best road ever. May your eternal trip be grand. Love you always and forever."
May James A. Talley rest in eternal peace, his life an enduring testament to love, family, and resilience.
