James "Jim" Bays

James, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2026, due to complications from surgery. Born on November 20, 1946, in Crocker, MO, James was the cherished son of Lee and Thelma. He was predeceased by his parents and six siblings, who undoubtedly welcomed him with open arms. James was a man of many talents and boundless generosity. Known for his warm heart and the ability to make friends with anyone he met, he was deeply respected and admired within his community. His kindness and willingness to help others knew no bounds — he would literally give someone the shirt off his back. On December 5, 1964, James married the love of his life, Donna "Sue" Sellers, in their hometown of Crocker, MO. Together, they shared an extraordinary 61 years of marriage, filled with love, laughter, and family. They were blessed with three children, James (Michelle), Bea (Randy), and Norman, who in turn gave them the joy of watching their family grow with five grandchildren: Niki (Andrew), Ali (Hayden), Nathaniel, Ian, and RJ, and five great-grandchildren. After graduating from Crocker High School in 1964, James embarked on a distinguished military career, dedicating 20 years to the U.S. Navy. Achieving the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer, he served his country with honor, including a tour in Vietnam. Following his retirement from the Navy, James continued his service to the nation as a logistician for the U.S. government. His life was further enriched by his dedication as a volunteer firefighter and member of the Rescue Squad, roles that allowed him to give back to his community in profound ways. James had a passion for tinkering with anything mechanical, particularly old tractors, a hobby that brought him immense joy and satisfaction. Whether he was in his workshop or lending a hand to a neighbor, James’s hands were never idle, and his heart was always full. A memorial service to honor James's extraordinary life will be held on October 10, 2026, at 12:00 PM at the American Legion Avon Post, located at 4812 E Main St, Avon, IN 46123. Family, friends, and all whose lives he touched are invited to celebrate his life and legacy. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to all who have supported them during this difficult time, and they continue to find comfort in the love and kindness extended by so many. In lieu of flowers, donations in James's memory may be made to a charity of your choice. James's legacy of love, service, and kindness will continue to inspire all who knew him. His spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him dearly.
