Jacob Kurian

March 3, 1934 — April 14, 2026

Jacob Kurian, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and community stalwart, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on March 3, 1934, in the vibrant village of Niranam in Kerala, India, Jacob's life was a testament to dedication, passion, and service. The son of Sosamma and Chandy Kurian, Jacob was shaped by the rich cultural tapestry of his birthplace and the nurturing embrace of his family. Jacob was predeceased by his loving brothers, Chandy, Mathew, Pothen, and Thomas, and his cherished sister, Mariamma. Despite these losses, he remained a pillar of strength and compassion for his surviving family: his devoted wife of 58 years, Susan, his sons Tony (Mini) and Tom, and his adored grandsons, Ethan and Samuel. In their hearts, his legacy endures, a testament to his deep love and unwavering support. Education was a cornerstone of Jacob's life. He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics from the University of Kerala and furthered his studies with a Master of Arts in Economics from the University of Jabalpur. His academic pursuits led him to Canada, where he earned a Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary. It was in Calgary that he met and married his beloved Susan, marking the beginning of a lifelong partnership filled with love and shared dreams. Jacob's professional journey was equally illustrious, starting with the National Council of Economic Research in India. In 1970, his path led him to the Government of Alberta, where he served as a dedicated Social Worker with Family and Social Services. Working in High Prairie, Westlock, and Edmonton, Jacob touched countless lives with his compassion and commitment until his retirement in 1998. A man of deep faith, Jacob was an active and founding member of St. Gregorios Malankara Orthodox Church in Edmonton. His service in various Management Committee roles was a testament to his dedication to his spiritual community. Jacob also played a significant role in the Canadian Kerala Cultural Association of Alberta, serving as a board member and Project Finance Director, where he was instrumental in the establishment of a new Cultural Centre. Jacob’s passions extended beyond his professional and community endeavors. An avid reader, he found joy in exploring history and political events, always keeping abreast of current affairs through newspapers and magazines. His love for the written word was matched only by his love for the garden, where he spent many peaceful hours cultivating a variety of vegetables. A devoted hockey fan, Jacob relished watching Edmonton Oilers games, particularly cherishing these moments with his grandsons, Ethan and Sam. A service celebrating Jacob’s life will be held on April 22, 2026, at 9:00 AM at St. Gregorios Malankara Orthodox Church, located at 15603-99 Avenue. Family, friends, and community members are invited to gather in remembrance of a life marked by love, service, and a profound commitment to others. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Jacob’s memory to the St. Gregorios Malankara Orthodox Church or the Canadian Kerala Cultural Association of Alberta, ensuring that his legacy of generosity and community spirit continues to inspire future generations. Jacob Kurian's life was a testament to the power of love, education, and community. His memory will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew him, a guiding light of compassion and integrity.
