J. Kelly Petre II, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on September 22, 2026, at the age of 81. Born on October 22, 1944, in Nashville, Tennessee, Kelly lived a life full of love, dedication, and service to those around him.
Kelly was the cherished son of the late Kelly and Mary Petre. He grew up in Nashville, where he attended Father Ryan High School, graduating in 1962. His pursuit of knowledge continued at St. Bernard College in Cullman, Alabama, where he graduated in 1966. Soon after, Kelly answered the call to serve his country, proudly serving in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1966 to 1972.
Professionally, Kelly dedicated many years to his work at Alcon Laboratories, where he made lasting contributions before enjoying a well-earned retirement. His career was marked by a steadfast commitment and a genuine passion for his work, earning him the respect and admiration of his colleagues.
Kelly's life was enriched by his love for sports, particularly softball and golf, hobbies that brought him joy and lifelong friendships. He shared many memorable moments on the fields and fairways, always approaching each game with enthusiasm and sportsmanship.
Above all, Kelly was a devoted family man. He shared 59 beautiful years with his loving wife, Joan, who stood by his side through life's many adventures. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Erik and Jennifer, who, along with Erik's wife Julie, brought immense pride and happiness to Kelly's life. His grandsons, Matthew and Ryan, were the light of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
Kelly is survived by his brothers Tim and Robert, and his sisters Clair, Joanna and her husband John, Kate and her husband Marty, and Sarah. He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, David and Bill. His extended family and friends will forever cherish the memories they shared with Kelly.
In celebrating Kelly's life, his family invites those who knew him to honor his memory by donating to a charity of their choice, reflecting his spirit of generosity and kindness.
Kelly's legacy of love, integrity, and joy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire and guide those he loved.
