It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the passing of Irvin Attakai, Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Irvin passed away peacefully on April 20, 2026, after a courageous battle with health illness. He was 75 years old.
Born on June 26, 1950, in Winslow, Arizona, Irvin was the cherished son of Mary Rose Charley and Billy Adeki. He was predeceased by his parents, an infant sibling, and several aunts and uncles. Irvin's life was a testament to resilience and dedication, marked by his unwavering commitment to his family and community.
Irvin's journey began in Winslow, where he graduated from Winslow High School in 1970. A gifted athlete, he made his mark as a great runner, holding the high school record from 1968 to 2002—a testament to his exceptional talent and determination.
In 1973, Irvin married his high school sweetheart, Shirley, and together they built a life filled with love and devotion over their 53 years of marriage. Their union was blessed with six cherished children: Ivanna W., Irvin Jr., Jon-Scott, Jeannette, Lyle Sr., and Alex Kyle. Irvin's legacy is further carried on by his 17 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, each a testament to the love and values he instilled in his family.
Irvin's career was marked by dedication and hard work. He served at ADOT for six years and later at BNSF for 21 years until his retirement in 2006 due to a knee injury. His work ethic was matched by his passion for life. Irvin was an active member of the Seba Dalkai frontier rodeo club, a talented dancer, and a skilled guitarist who found joy in playing old country songs, especially those by The Eagles. He was also known for his prowess in basketball and his commitment to track and field during his youth.
Known as a wise and loving man, Irvin's heart was always with his family. He took immense pride in his children, two of whom, Jon Scott and Lyle Attakai, served in the military. His dedication to providing for his family and his ability to instill strong values in his children were hallmarks of his life.
Irvin's life will be celebrated on April 27, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Restoration Church of the Nazarene, located at 323 N Alfred Ave, Winslow, AZ. The service will be officiated by Pastor Johnny Nells, and will feature heartfelt messages and songs honoring Irvin's memory.
