June 26, 1950 — April 20, 2026

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Irvin Attakai, Sr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who departed this world on April 20, 2026, at the age of 75. Irvin was born on June 26, 1950, in the vibrant town of Winslow, Arizona, to Mary Rose Charley and Billy Adeki. He embarked on his final journey after a courageous battle with health illness, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and devotion to family. Irvin spent his formative years in Winslow, a town that would forever hold a special place in his heart. A proud graduate of Winslow High School in 1970, Irvin was renowned for his athletic prowess. As a high school track and field star, he broke the school record in 1968, a testament to his determination and unyielding spirit that remained unbroken until 2002. His passion for running was matched only by his love for basketball, where he showcased his competitive nature and sportsmanship. In 1973, Irvin married his high school sweetheart, Shirley, embarking on a beautiful journey that spanned over 53 years. Together, they built a family rooted in love and mutual respect, raising six wonderful children: Ivanna W., Irvin Jr., Jon-Scott, Jeannette, Lyle Sr., and Alex Kyle. Their home was always filled with laughter, music, and the gentle strumming of Irvin's guitar as he played his favorite old country songs, particularly those by The Eagles. Irvin's career was marked by dedication and hard work, spending six years with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and 21 years at BNSF Railway. He retired in 2006 after a knee injury, but his commitment to providing for his family never wavered. Irvin was also a proud member of the Seba Dalkai Frontier Rodeo Club, where he shared his love for the rodeo with his community. A man of wisdom and kindness, Irvin was revered not only for his ability to provide guidance but also for his infectious joy. He was a great dancer, often seen twirling Shirley around the dance floor, their connection palpable to all who witnessed it. His greatest pride, however, lay in his family, particularly his two sons, Jon Scott and Lyle Attakai, who served in the military, embodying the values of honor and service that Irvin held dear. Irvin is survived by his beloved wife Shirley, his six children, 17 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his legacy with pride and love. He is predeceased by his parents, an infant sibling, and several cherished uncles and aunts, who he has now joined in eternal rest. A memorial service to celebrate Irvin's life will be held on April 27, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Restoration Church of the Nazarene, located at 323 N Alfred Ave, Winslow, AZ. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a man who touched so many lives with his warmth and generosity. In honoring Irvin's memory, let us remember the laughter he shared, the wisdom he imparted, and the love he gave unconditionally. His spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Rest in peace, dear Irvin. Thank you for being our guiding light and for the countless ways you enriched our lives.
