Irma Susanna Anzaldua Leal

May 24, 1932 — April 6, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and profound respect that we announce the passing of Irma Susanna Anzaldua Leal, a beloved matriarch, entrepreneur, and friend to many. Irma passed away peacefully on April 6, 2026, enveloped in the warmth and love of her family, leaving behind a legacy that spans generations and enriches countless lives. Born on May 24, 1932, in Mercedes, Texas, Irma was the cherished daughter of Elias Victor and Guadalupe Anzaldua. She grew up in a family that valued hard work and community, qualities that would become the cornerstone of her life’s journey. Irma graduated from Mercedes High School in 1950 and further pursued her education at the Business School of Mercedes, equipping herself with skills that would later fuel her entrepreneurial spirit. Irma’s early years were spent working alongside her parents at the Arco Iris Tortilla Factory, a beloved local business in Mercedes. This experience sowed the seeds of her future successes and instilled in her a deep appreciation for her cultural heritage. After completing her education, Irma contributed her talents to the Human Resources department at C.R. Anthony's Department Store. In 1955, Irma married the love of her life, Hector Jesus (Jesse) Leal, on Thanksgiving Day, marking the beginning of a partnership that was as strong in business as it was in love. Their beautiful union, filled with dance and laughter, lasted until Jesse's passing in 2009. Together, they embarked on an entrepreneurial adventure that began with a simple yet profound decision to invest in a tortilla machine rather than a house. This choice led to the opening of Leal's Mexican Café and Tortilla Factory in 1957, a venture that would grow into a cherished community institution with four restaurants and a thriving tortilla production facility. Irma's business acumen was matched only by her warmth and generosity. Known affectionately as "Mama Leal," she treated every guest as family. Her legacy in the culinary world was recognized by Foodways Texas with a Lifetime Achievement Award, a testament to her impact on the Mexican restaurant industry in Texas. Beyond her entrepreneurial endeavors, Irma was a pillar of her community. A devoted member of Saint Clements Anglican Church, she dedicated her time to feeding the less fortunate and was a steadfast supporter of her beloved Dallas Cowboys. Her infectious laughter could often be heard in the lively halls of a casino, where she enjoyed slot machines and blackjack. Irma's vivacious spirit, quick wit, and unwavering love for her family left an indelible mark. She is survived by her children, Hector, Victor, Abel, Alma Jaramillo, and Laura Leal, along with 20 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren who will carry forward her legacy of love and resilience. Irma was predeceased by her parents, siblings Lupe McIlveen, Josefina Maroquin, and Noe Anzaldua, and her grandson Mason Shafer Leal. A celebration of Irma’s life will take place on April 10, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church, 507 West Second Street, Muleshoe, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Meals on Wheels or the Muleshoe Opportunity Fund Scholarship in Irma's honor, to continue her lifelong commitment to community support and education. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Muleshoe Medical Center, First Responders, UMC Hospital and Rehab of Lubbock, Hospice Services, and all who provided exceptional care during Irma’s illness. Irma Susanna Anzaldua Leal was a beacon of love and strength, a woman whose life was a testament to the power of family, faith, and tireless dedication. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were privileged to know her.
