Irma McGruder, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on September 15, 1934, in the charming town of Natchitoches, Louisiana, Irma was the beloved daughter of Ray Burton, Sr. and Lucille Burton. Her life was a testament to love, dedication, and the profound impact one can have on those around them.
Irma's journey began in the heart of Louisiana, where she was raised alongside her siblings: Lehman, Leroy, Ray Jr., Ellen, and Verna. She carried the values instilled by her parents throughout her life, values that guided her through both joyful and challenging times. After graduating from Peabody High School in Alexandria, LA, Irma embarked on a path that would lead her to Houston, Texas, in 1953, a city that would become her lifelong home.
Her first job at Olander's Grocery Store in Alexandria marked the beginning of a career characterized by a strong work ethic and a commitment to serving others. Irma was known for her unwavering dedication and was admired by colleagues and friends alike for her relentless spirit and compassion.
Irma’s life was enriched by her marriage to Roy Lee McGruder, with whom she shared three wonderful daughters: Belinda (Jerry), Jackie (Ray), and Cheryl. Together, they built a family rooted in love and mutual support. Irma's nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family as she embraced her seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren with open arms, instilling in them the same values she held dear.
A devoted member of her church community, Irma's faith was a guiding light in her life. Her involvement in the church and dedication to her community left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. She spent countless hours tending to her beloved flowers and plants, finding solace and joy in the simple beauty of nature. Her garden was a sanctuary where she nurtured not only plants but also relationships that blossomed into lifelong friendships.
Irma's generosity knew no bounds. She was always willing to lend a helping hand to friends and neighbors, and her compassion for the elderly led her to provide care for many seniors in her neighborhood. Her kindness and empathy touched the lives of many, leaving a legacy of love and compassion.
Irma was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Lehman, Leroy, and Ray Jr., her sister Ellen Sessions, and her granddaughter Jennifer Barrett. She is survived by her daughters, Belinda, Jackie, and Cheryl, her sister Verna Davis, and a host of extended family and neighbors who all mourn her passing but celebrate the remarkable life she led.
The McGruder family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers who provided loving care and support during Irma's final years. Their kindness and dedication will forever be remembered.
