Irene Putney

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Irene Putney, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, who departed this life on September 7, 2026, after a brief illness. Born on November 16, 1939, in Richmond, Virginia, Irene was a beacon of warmth and kindness whose life was a testament to generosity and love. Irene was the cherished daughter of the late Butch Mattox and Flonia Mae Houston. She was predeceased by Charles Putney, her children's father, and her beloved son, Philip Putney. Left to honor her memory are her devoted daughters, Pamela and Patti Putney, who were the light of her life. She also leaves behind a legacy of love in her six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who will forever hold her memory in their hearts. Irene's journey began in Petersburg, Virginia, where she graduated from Peabody High School. She went on to dedicate 39 years of her life to the United States Postal Service, where she served as a postal clerk. Known as the "go-to" person at work, Irene was admired for her reliability and her generous spirit. Her colleagues often turned to her for guidance and support, and she offered both with a smile and a willing heart. Outside of work, Irene's life was filled with the sounds and flavors of her passions. She found joy in the soulful rhythms of Blues, Classic Soul, and Jazz music, which often filled her home with a comforting ambiance. Her love for sewing and cooking was well-known, and her kitchen was a haven for the delectable desserts she so lovingly prepared for family and friends. Her rum cake, in particular, was legendary, a sweet symbol of her affection and care. A woman of many talents, Irene also enjoyed the mental challenge of crossword puzzles and indulged in the whimsical pleasure of reading horoscopes for her friends and family. Her laughter and insight, often shared over a cup of coffee or a freshly baked treat, will be deeply missed by all who knew her. In her passing, Irene leaves behind a tapestry of cherished memories and a legacy defined by love, generosity, and an unwavering dedication to those she held dear.
