Irene Kent

March 7, 1928 — March 1, 2026

It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Irene Kent. Irene departed this world peacefully, surrounded by the comfort of her home, on March 1, 2026, just shy of her 99th birthday. Born on March 6 1928, in Portage, Michigan, Irene was a beacon of wisdom, strength, and compassion. Her early years in Portage instilled in her a sense of community and adventure that would guide her throughout her life. She pursued a career in chemistry, a field in which she excelled, known for her meticulous nature and insatiable curiosity. Her contributions as a chemist not only advanced her workplace but also inspired many young women to pursue careers in science, breaking barriers with grace and determination. Irene's life was enriched by her marriage to Donald Kent, a partnership marked by love, mutual respect, and shared dreams. Together, they built a family filled with warmth and joy, raising two children, Kevin and Kelly Kent, who carry forward her legacy of kindness and resilience. An avid tennis player, Irene could often be found on the courts, her spirit as vibrant as her forehand. Her passion for tennis was matched only by her dedication to the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts (KIA), where she was an active member. Her involvement with KIA reflected her belief in the transformative power of art and her commitment to community enrichment. Irene's life was a testament to the power of love, family, and perseverance. She was a proud grandmother to four grandchildren and a doting great-grandmother to four great-grandchildren, each of whom she cherished deeply. Her family was her greatest joy, and she devoted herself to nurturing their dreams and celebrating their achievements. Though Irene's passing leaves a void in our hearts, the memory of her laughter, wisdom, and unyielding spirit remains with us. Her legacy is one of love, integrity, and a life lived to the fullest. In accordance with her wishes, a private ceremony will be held to honor Irene's life. The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Irene's name to the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, ensuring her passion for art and community continues to inspire future generations. Irene Kent will be remembered as a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend—a woman whose life was a testament to the beauty of a heart that loved deeply and a mind that never ceased to explore. Her memory will forever be a blessing to all who knew her.
