In Loving Memory
Irene Kent
March 7, 1930 — March 2, 2026
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Irene Kent, who departed this world peacefully on March 1, 2026, just a few days shy of her 99th birthday. Born on March 7, 1928, in the quaint town of Portage, Michigan, Irene lived a life defined by grace, intelligence, and unwavering love for her family and community.
Irene’s journey through life was marked by her remarkable career as a chemist, a profession through which she applied her sharp intellect and inquisitive nature to contribute to scientific advancements. Her dedication and passion for her work left an indelible mark on those she collaborated with, and her legacy within the field will be cherished for generations.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Irene was a cherished member of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts (KIA), where she found joy and inspiration in the vibrant community of artists and art enthusiasts. Her involvement with KIA was a testament to her lifelong appreciation for the arts, and she took great pleasure in sharing this passion with others.
Irene's heart was a wellspring of kindness and warmth, a beacon of love for her family, which includes her children, Kevin and Kelly Kent, who were the pride of her life. Her legacy continues through her four cherished grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense joy to her life. Irene's home was often filled with the sounds of laughter and the clinking of tennis rackets, as she was an avid player and spectator of the sport, sharing many memorable moments on the court and in the stands with those she held dear.
Irene’s life, rich in love and laughter, was a testament to her resilient spirit and generous heart. Her stories, wisdom, and her extraordinary ability to find beauty in the world around her will be sorely missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know her.
In celebrating Irene’s life, we honor a woman whose presence was a gift to everyone she encountered. Her family invites those who knew her to join in cherishing the memories and continuing the legacy of kindness she leaves behind.
A private memorial service will be held to honor Irene's life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, in tribute to Irene’s enduring love for the arts.
Rest in peace, dear Irene. Your light will forever shine in our hearts.
