Irene Kent
March 7, 1928 — March 1, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Irene Kent, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, on March 1, 2026, just shy of her 99th birthday. Irene left this world as she lived in it—quietly and with grace—at her home in Portage, Michigan, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on March 6, 1928, in Portage, Michigan, Irene was the cherished daughter of a close-knit community that would forever remain her home. Her early years were marked by a curious mind and an insatiable thirst for knowledge, traits that led her to a successful career as a chemist. In a time when the field was largely dominated by men, Irene was a trailblazer, breaking barriers with her intelligence and determination.
Irene’s professional life was only a part of her rich tapestry. In her personal life, she found her greatest joy in her family. She married the love of her life, Donald Kent, and together they built a legacy of love and resilience. Their bond was a testament to enduring partnership, and their love story served as an inspiration to all who knew them.
She was a devoted mother to her children, Kevin and Kelly Kent, who were her pride and joy. Her nurturing spirit extended to her role as a grandmother and great-grandmother. Irene cherished her four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in her heart. Her family was her greatest accomplishment, and she delighted in their achievements, offering unwavering support and wisdom.
Beyond her family and career, Irene was an enthusiastic participant in life. She was an avid tennis player, a passion she pursued with vigor well into her later years. Her love for the sport was matched only by her dedication to the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts (KIA), where she was an active member. Her contributions to the institute were as vibrant as her spirit, leaving an indelible mark on the community she loved so dearly.
Irene’s life was a testament to kindness, strength, and resilience, and she will be remembered for her generous heart and gentle demeanor. Her legacy will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her.
In accordance with her wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held to honor her life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts in Irene’s memory, ensuring that her passion for art and community continues to flourish.
Though she is no longer with us, Irene’s spirit lives on in the hearts of her loved ones and the innumerable lives she touched. She will be profoundly missed but forever remembered with love and admiration.
