It is with great love and respect that we honor the life of Irene Chappelle, who passed away peacefully at her home on September 22, 2026. Born on May 2, 1929, in St. Louis, MO, Irene lived a life rich in love, learning, and laughter. Irene was a woman of remarkable intellect and kindness. She pursued her education with passion, graduating from The University of Connecticut and then earning a Master's degree from The University of Michigan in Library Science. Her commitment to education and knowledge led her to a distinguished career in teaching. Irene shared her love of learning at several institutions throughout New York City, including Cornell Medical School. She later enriched the lives of her students in the Hartford School system, retiring from Hartford High School as a beloved educator who left a lasting impression on all who were fortunate enough to sit in her classroom. Beyond her professional achievements, Irene was a woman of many interests. She was an avid reader whose love for books was rivaled only by her enthusiasm for the performing arts. Plays, musicals, movies, and especially jazz music brought her immense joy. Yet, above all, it was her family and friends who held the place of greatest importance in her heart. Known for her extraordinary sense of humor, Irene had the gift of making anyone laugh, transforming ordinary moments into cherished memories. Irene is predeceased by her beloved husband, L. Palmer Chappelle Jr. She is survived by her devoted sons, L. Palmer Chappelle III and his wife Geralyn, and Charles G. Chappelle. Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren, Sara Elizabeth Chappelle, and grandsons Cameron and Cassidy Chappelle. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to a charity of your choice in Irene's memory, a testament to her generous spirit and enduring love for others.
