Ira Lee Hammack, Jr.

Ira Lee Hammack, Jr., a cherished father and friend, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2026, surrounded by his loving children. Born on October 9, 1938, in Centreville, Mississippi, Ira was the beloved son of Ira Lee Hammack, Sr. and Lois Smith Hammack. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of over 54 years, Betty Lou Hammack, with whom he shared a life filled with love and adventures. Ira grew up in Mississippi, where he attended Hattiesburg High School, graduating in 1955. His passion for learning led him to the University of Southern Mississippi, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Physics in 1959. His thirst for knowledge continued as he pursued specialized training in electronics, radar fundamentals, and computer systems between 1959 and 1967. In 1960, Ira served his country in the Army Reserves, followed by a year with The Mississippi National Guard. His professional journey took him to The Boeing Company as an engineer, and later to a distinguished 35-year career as a computer systems analyst and engineer at General Electric Company. Ira took immense pride in being part of the Apollo 11 team that achieved the historic first moon landing on July 20, 1969, earning him a place in the Apollo/Saturn V Roll of Honor. Ira’s life was rich with hobbies and interests. An avid hunter and fisherman, he found joy in quail hunting with his German Shorthaired Pointers and cherished summer days with his family at Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. His RV adventures and bass boat outings were a source of great happiness. Ira also shared a love for gardening with his wife, spending many years cultivating their vegetable garden at Blackacre Conservancy's Community Garden. Known for his easy-going personality, Ira was always ready with a smile and a joke, bringing joy to all who knew him. His kindness and warmth touched many lives, leaving a legacy of love and laughter. Ira leaves behind his three devoted children, Theresa Lee Mayer (David,) Margaret Alyce Elkins (Randall,) and Kenneth Wayne Hammack, who will forever hold him in their hearts. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff at Baptist Health Hospital and Hosparus Health for their compassionate care during Ira’s final days. In honor of Ira's life, the family has chosen to hold a private ceremony. They kindly request that donations be made in his memory to organizations dear to his heart. "Forever in our hearts."
