Inez Browne

November 5, 1921 — May 17, 2023

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Inez Browne, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, who peacefully departed this life on May 17, 2023, at the age of 101. Inez was born on November 5, 1921, in the small town of Estill, South Carolina, to the late Wilbia Carmichael and Norman Brown Sr. Her early life was marked by resilience, growth, and an unyielding commitment to education and service. Inez's journey from the halls of Beach High School in Savannah, Georgia, to earning a basketball scholarship at Savannah State College, exemplified her determination and tenacity. Graduating in 1945 with a degree in business, she furthered her education by obtaining a teaching degree from City College in New York. In 1950, Inez embarked on a remarkable teaching career with the Henry County Board of Education in Abbeville, Alabama, where she dedicated thirty-eight years to nurturing young minds. Throughout her career, Inez's impact extended beyond the classroom. As a Student Council Advisor and Girls Basketball Coach at Empire Jr. High, she inspired many students. Her role as a chaperone for the American Institute of Foreign Studies allowed her to broaden the horizons of inner-city youth with travels to London, Paris, and Rome. Passionate about education equality, Inez was an active participant in the 'A Better Chance Program,' securing scholarships for urban school children to Ivy League institutions. Her commitment to the 'Council for Exceptional Children' showcased her dedication to enhancing educational outcomes for students with special needs. A woman of deep faith, Inez embraced the Catholic Church after marrying her beloved husband, Tedd Browne, on June 30, 1956. As a long-standing member of St. Phillip Neri Church in Cleveland, she served as a Lay Minister and a delegate for The Black Catholic Conference, becoming one of the first certified black pastoral administrators in Cleveland. Her leadership extended to the Catholic African American Advisory Board, where she influenced many with her wisdom and compassion. Inez was also a cherished member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Alpha Omega Chapter. Her sisters will remember her for her beautiful voice in the choir and her active participation in hospitality, education, and transportation committees. Her unselfish nature and warmth touched all who knew her, leaving an indelible mark on her community. Her legacy continues through her three devoted sons, David (Elaine) Browne, Michael (Muriel) Browne, and Christopher Browne; her four grandchildren, India, Michael Jr., Christopher; and David Victor; her great-granddaughter, Makenzie; and a host of foster children who were fortunate to feel her love and guidance. Inez also leaves behind her cherished nephew, Joshua Daily, her beloved niece, Jovan, and countless dear friends and associates. Preceded in death by her parents, Wilbia and Norman Sr., her husband Tedd, her sister Edna Mae Brown, and her brother Norman Brown Jr., Inez's reunion with them brings comfort to those she leaves behind. Inez Browne was a nurturing presence, known for her humility, kindness, and unwavering love. She was a foster parent to many, providing a positive influence and a stable environment for numerous children. Her life was a testament to the power of faith, education, and community service. A celebration of Inez's extraordinary life will be held on May 27, 2023, at 10:00 AM at Watsons Funeral Home, located at 10913 Superior Ave., Cleveland, Ohio 44106. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Inez are invited to join in honoring her memory and legacy. In the words of those she leaves behind, Inez truly bent over backwards for her loved ones and strangers alike, living a life defined by love and service. She will be sorely missed, but her spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her.
