Ilona Hunter, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by her loving family. Born on January 27, 1945, in Blankenburg, Germany, Ilona's life was a testament to resilience, love, and service to others. Ilona was the cherished daughter of Peter and Lisolette Upenieks, who instilled in her the values of kindness and dedication. After graduating high school in Germany, she pursued her passion for the culinary arts by attending culinary school in Switzerland, where she honed her skills and discovered a lifelong love for cooking. In 1963, destiny brought her to Kaiserslautern, Germany, where she met the love of her life, John Roy Hunter. As fate would have it, her and John shared the same exact same birthday, down to the hour. They married and embarked on a journey together, sharing a beautiful marriage that spanned over 61 years. Their union produced a loving family that includes their children: Sonja Holliday of Lampasas, Roy Hunter and wife Cindy of Friendswood, TX, Lisa Ray and husband Mike of Lometa, TX, Tommy Hunter and fiancé Victoria of Burnet, TX, and Kaycie McKay and husband David Woodcock of Weatherford, TX. She is also survived by her nephew, Hanspeter Pfeiffer of Germany. Ilona's legacy extends to her grandchildren, Tommy York and wife Jessica, Kelsie Ray, Shyhann Palacio and husband Ray, Christian Moore and wife Victoria, Taylor Mavromichalis and husband Michael, Johnny York, Shelby Hunter, Ian Hunter, Tatum Hunter, Slader Hunter, Lacey Holliday, Ryker Kiser, and Kora Kiser. She also delighted in her role as a great-grandmother to 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter, each of whom brought her immense joy and pride. As an Army wife for over 20 years, Ilona was the heart and soul of her family during their many relocations, standing by John's side with unwavering support and grace. Her dedication to the military community was recognized when she was appointed Mayor of the military housing area in Pattonville, Ludwigshurg/Kornwesthein, Germany. Her leadership and compassion made her a beloved figure among families stationed there. Ilona's talents were as diverse as they were impressive. She owned and operated an upholstery shop, where her creativity and craftsmanship shone brightly. Her artistic flair was also evident in her award-winning knitting and crocheting, hobbies that brought her both relaxation and accolades. Ilona was known as a great cook, always eager to welcome anyone into her home with a warm meal and open arms. She found joy in camping and fishing, often sharing these adventures with her loved ones. Her warm heart and willingness to help others were hallmarks of her character, making her a cherished friend and confidante to many. Ilona's life was a rich tapestry of experiences, from her early days as a candy striper at the 140th General Hospital in Nuremberg, Germany, to traveling the world with her family, creating memories that will be treasured forever. Ilona is predeceased by her parents, Peter and Lisolette Upenieks, her brother Christian Pfeiffer, and her beloved grandson Brodie Ray. Her legacy lives on through her surviving family members, each of whom carry forward her spirit of love and resilience. Ilona Hunter's life was a symphony of love, service, and creativity. Her vibrant spirit and generous heart touched everyone she met. As we celebrate her life, we remember a woman who lived fully, loved deeply, and leaves behind a legacy of kindness and strength. She will be dearly missed but forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
