With heavy hearts but profound gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the peaceful passing of Ierenima “Mabel” Tanusala-Tuanigamanuolepola on March 8, 2026, at the age of 86. Mabel slipped away as she had lived—serenely and surrounded by love—in her sleep. Born on January 5, 1940, in the beautiful village of Fofo Mauputasi, Upolu, American Samoa, Mabel brought warmth and grace into the world. She was the cherished daughter of the late Fatu Niulaga Solaita Setua and Ikapona Polani Tanusala, who instilled in her the values of kindness and community. Mabel's life was a tapestry woven with love, strength, and dedication. She was the beloved wife of the late Tiatia Sa’a Tuanigamanuolepola, with whom she shared 61 remarkable years of marriage, having wed on the island of Tutuila, American Samoa, in 1964. Their union was a beacon of love and resilience, serving as a foundation for their large and loving family. Mabel was a devoted mother to her nine children: Rodney Tiatia “Big T” (Marionette), Velevoa Veniola Risapa, Ulutuga Fa’ofina Tuimalo (Samantha), Ropati Nofa “Don” (Tina), Talamio Fraser Hoafine (Tinilala “Lala”), Faaifoga Tuipale Moresino (Vasala), Atutulia Savea Poresitane (Nora), Vaai Manuitaitala Solaita (Faamanuia), and Rev. Soresipi Sipi Faatolatai (First Lady Matalena). Her legacy extends through her vast family tree, including 108 grandchildren and 66 great-grandchildren, each a testament to the enduring love she shared. Mabel was a cherished sister to her surviving siblings: Roseta Williams “Nana”, Leiatua Leifoa Militi, Gatoa Rodney Fuiomose Tanusala, Iapo Poligi Favai Tuimuisie Tanusala, and Keolafafagi “Auntie Keo” Mulinu’u. She is predeceased by her brothers and sisters, Rotane Taneolevao Levao, Tualagi Moore, Siafafa’i Polatua, Marise Marrisa Tufeao, and Malietoa Filefileafi Sofeli, with whom she shared an unbreakable bond. A lifelong learner and achiever, Mabel graduated from San Diego University in 1970 with both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree. Her career spanned over five decades, beginning as an airport cleaner and culminating in her retirement as a manager in 2025. Her dedication and work ethic were exemplary, inspiring all who had the privilege to work alongside her. Mabel’s heart found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She was an active member of St. Rita’s Church, where her son serves as a pastor. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, guiding her actions and inspiring those around her. She loved Samoan singing, dancing, and cooking, sharing her culture and warmth with everyone she met. Known for her kindness and caring nature, Mabel was a beacon of light and a source of comfort to all who knew her. Her gentle spirit and infectious smile left an indelible mark on her community and her family, who carry forward her legacy of love and compassion. As we say goodbye to our beloved Mabel, we remember her as a loving wife, devoted mother, cherished sister, and treasured friend. Her life was a blessing, and she will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the honor of knowing her. A celebration of Mabel’s life will be held at St. Rita’s Church, with details to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to St. Rita’s Church in memory of Mabel’s generous spirit and dedication. May her soul find eternal peace, and may her memory continue to inspire us all.
