February 14, 1957 — March 5, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Hugh Howlett, who left this world on March 5, 2026, at the age of 69. Born on February 14, 1957, in Amherst, New York, Hugh peacefully departed at his home after bravely facing a battle with cancer. His journey was marked by resilience, love, and an enduring commitment to uplifting his community and family. Hugh was the beloved son of the late Hugh G. Howlett and Mary Patricia Howlett. He was predeceased by his father but leaves behind a cherished family to celebrate his life and legacy. His cherished step-daughter, Vanessa Callaghan, survives him, along with his devoted siblings: Heather Austin, Heidi Geiger and her husband Michael, Hal Howlett and his wife Rebecca, Mary Hope Madsen and her husband Dave, and Helene Wolf and her husband Ken. Hugh was a proud uncle to Shane, Brandon, Jake, Derek, Ben, Fran, Jamie, Matt, Brad, Leah, and Haley, who will all carry forward the laughter and insights he shared with them. From 1977 to 1982, Hugh served his country with honor in the United States Navy as a Torpedoman's Mate, Second Class, aboard the USS Simon Bolivar SSBN641. His service exemplified his values of dedication, courage, and camaraderie, leaving a lasting impact on those he served alongside. Beyond his professional and military accomplishments, Hugh's heart belonged to the community. His involvement with America's Thanksgiving Parade was a testament to his passion for creating joy and wonder for others. Hugh was not just a participant; he was a cornerstone in organizing the beloved Turkey Trot, dedicating countless hours to ensure its success year after year. His efforts brought smiles to many and fostered a sense of unity among all who attended. In his personal life, Hugh found solace and creativity in designing and building "Do it yourself" home projects, generously sharing his skills with family members. This hobby was more than just a pastime; it was an expression of his love and desire to create beautiful spaces for those he held dear. While Hugh's physical presence will be deeply missed, his spirit will continue to inspire acts of kindness and community service. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in his honor to the Michigan Thanksgiving Parade Foundation, supporting a cause that was near and dear to his heart. Donations can be made at Michigan Thanksgiving Parade Foundation. A private funeral ceremony will be held to honor Hugh's life, where family and close friends will gather to remember his warmth, humor, and the many ways in which he enriched their lives. Though he did not leave behind grandchildren or great-grandchildren, the legacy of his kindness and dedication will be carried forward by all who knew him. Hugh Howlett's life was a testament to the power of service, creativity, and community spirit. As we bid farewell, we celebrate a life well-lived, filled with love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place for all. May his memory be a blessing to us all.
