October 30, 1931 — July 5, 2026
Howard Donald Dickey, a cherished soul who brought warmth and laughter to all who knew him, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2026, at the age of 94. Born on October 30, 1931, in Alliance, Alabama, Howard was the beloved son of the late Howard Marton Dickey and Cora Mabelle Dickey. His early years in Alliance shaped him into the kind-hearted and dedicated man many came to love.
Donald's life was marked by a profound sense of purpose and an unyielding dedication to his family and career. He embarked on his professional journey with the Warrior & Gulf Navigation Company, where he showcased his unwavering work ethic and determination. Starting as a clerk, Howard's diligence and leadership propelled him to become the Terminal Superintendent of the Warrior & Gulf Navigation Company Port Birmingham facility until his well-earned retirement.
In his personal life, Donald experienced the joy and heartache that comes with a full and vibrant life. He was predeceased by his sons, Keith and Kenneth Dickey; his beloved grandson, John Howard Dickey; his dear sister, Bessy May Jennings; and his cherished parents. Yet, Donalds spirit endures through his surviving family: his devoted children, Shelia Borders and Tony Michael Dickey; his grandchildren, Ashley Hartley, Brandon Dickey, Kelly Watson, Kristy Williams, Don Frederick, and Andrea Lee; his sisters, Patricia Whitlock and Martha Reed; and a host of great-grandchildren, including one great-great-grandchild.
Later in life, Donald found a renewed sense of companionship with his high school friend, Jean McCarty Bell. Together, they embraced their golden years, traveling the United States in an RV and creating countless memories. Donalds love for exploration took him to many of the majestic National Parks across the western United States and even on an adventurous journey to Alaska. His travels were meticulously documented through hundreds of photos and videos, a testament to his love for the open road and the beauty of nature.
Above all, Donald cherished the moments spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family was the cornerstone of his life, and his legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire them for generations to come.
A funeral service to honor Donald's life will be held on July 11, 2026, at Liberty Baptist Church, 8218 Short Creek Road, Bessemer, Alabama 35023. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations be made to a charity of your choice in Howard's memory.
