It is with profound sadness and deep respect that we announce the passing of Howard Eugene Anderson Sr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Howard peacefully departed this life on June 25, 2026, at the age of 73, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and unwavering faith.
Born on May 6, 1953, in Muncie, Indiana, Howard was the beloved son of the late Reverend James Anderson Sr. and First Lady Ruth Hardina Anderson. His upbringing was deeply rooted in faith, compassion, and a commitment to community—a foundation that he carried throughout his life.
Howard's journey through life was marked by his dedication to education and his relentless pursuit of knowledge. He graduated from Gary West Side High School in 1971 and continued his academic endeavors, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Calumet College of St. Joseph in 1995. Furthering his expertise, he pursued post-graduate work at Indiana Wesleyan University, focusing on business management and related studies.
On September 7, 1974, Howard married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Charlotte Shumane Anderson. Together, they raised four children, instilling in them the values of faith, discipline, and a commitment to excellence. Howard exemplified these values through his actions, consistently modeling service and integrity.
Professionally, Howard dedicated over 25 years to the accounting department at U.S. Steel (formerly Midwest Steel), where he also served as head of OSHA and the safety committee, ensuring the well-being of his colleagues. Beyond his career, Howard was passionately committed to community service. For nearly a decade, he served the Gary Community School System as head swim coach at William A. Wirth High School, teaching students—many with no prior swimming experience—the skills, discipline, and confidence they needed to succeed.
Howard's life was a testament to his kind heart, quiet strength, joyful spirit, and unwavering faith. His legacy of service, love, and encouragement lives on in all who were blessed to know him.
