It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Hobert Claxton Welch on June 10, 2026, at the age of 91. Hobert was surrounded by the warmth and care of the compassionate staff at Scotia Village, where he spent his final days. Born on April 16, 1935, in Davidson County, North Carolina, to Hobert Andrew and Amanda Sue Nifong Welch, Hobert was the youngest of a family that embodied love and resilience. His early years were spent in the embrace of a large family, with his brothers—Luke, Norman, Buford, Jay, Colon, and James—and sisters—Elva Mae, Faye, Maxine, and Eunice Lee—who have all predeceased him. He shared an especially close bond with his surviving sister, Leona Fishel, and was cherished by numerous nieces and nephews, who brought joy into his life. Hobert’s life was marked by dedication and service, both to his country and his community. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960, an experience that he carried with honor throughout his life. On June 8, 1958, Hobert married the love of his life, Billie Hammett. Together, they built a beautiful family and shared decades of love until Billie’s passing. Hobert began his career as a lineman with Duke Power Company, a testament to his strong work ethic and commitment. His career journey continued as he contributed to Wells Fargo and Brinks armored car services, eventually concluding his professional life at the age of 78, driving a rollback truck for Adessa. Hobert’s ability to adapt and thrive in diverse roles was admired by all who knew him. A man of faith, Hobert was an active member of Woodlawn Baptist Church for 57 years, until moving away in 2015. His gentle spirit and involvement in the church community left a lasting impact on many. Hobert was known for his wit and humor, bringing laughter and joy to those around him. Soft-spoken and kind, he loved being in the company of others, often captivating audiences with his stories and warm presence. His green thumb was evident in his beloved backyard garden, where he took great pride in growing tomatoes, squash, and cucumbers—sharing the fruits of his labor with family and friends. Hobert is survived by his beloved children, Nancy and Doug (Amy), who were the light of his life, carrying forward the legacy of love and kindness that he instilled in them. His family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Scotia Village and Scotland Hospice for their compassionate care during Hobert’s final journey. A service to celebrate Hobert’s remarkable life will be held on June 16, 2026, at 11:00 AM at McEwen Funeral Home, located at 5716 Monroe Rd., Charlotte, NC 28212. Family and friends are invited to honor the life of a man who touched so many with his kindness, humor, and steadfast love. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Hobert’s memory to a charity of your choice, reflecting the spirit of generosity that he embodied throughout his life. Rest in peace, dear Hobert. Your legacy of love, laughter, and service will forever be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know you.
