Hilda Virginia (Detter) Sheppard

April 13, 1935 — April 12, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Hilda Virginia (Detter) Sheppard on April 12, 2026, just one day shy of her 91st birthday. Born on April 13, 1935, in the quaint town of Martinsburg, West Virginia, Hilda was the cherished daughter of Earl and Hilda (Lentz) Detter. Her journey through life was filled with love, devotion, and a steadfast faith in God, which she nurtured from her childhood days in her beloved birthplace to her later years in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Hilda's early career began with dedication and hard work at Sears, Roebuck and Co., and she later brought her diligent spirit to Herb Rousseau & Son Siding Company. Her professional life was marked by integrity and an unwavering commitment to those she served. A woman of faith, Hilda found her spiritual home at the Central Congregational Church of Chelmsford. It was here that her faith blossomed, supported by a loving community that embraced her as she, in turn, embraced them. Her commitment to her faith was not only evident in her regular attendance but also in her actions, as she often crocheted prayer shawls to comfort those in need, a testament to her generous spirit. Hilda possessed an array of talents and passions. She was an accomplished seamstress, crafting beautiful clothes for her family. Her talented hands also created countless knitted and crocheted treasures, from dolls to afghans, cherished by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her love of these crafts was a reflection of the love she held for her family, a love that was as warm and comforting as the afghans she so lovingly created. She was predeceased by her parents, her beloved son, Mark E. Sheppard, and her cherished grandson, Matthew D. Lis. Yet, her legacy of love and kindness continues to flourish in the lives of those she leaves behind: her devoted daughters, Linda A. Lis and her husband Brian H. of Chelmsford, and Evelyn K. Fox and her husband Michael K. of Nashville, Georgia. She is also survived by her dear sister, Edith M. Brown of Martinsburg, West Virginia, six adoring grandchildren—Jennifer Bellissimo of Chelmsford, Stephanie Peterson and Christine Auger of Ayer, Aaron Fox of Nashville, Georgia, Karson Fox of Camilla, Georgia, and Adam Sheppard of Manchester, New Hampshire—and thirteen treasured great-grandchildren, each a testament to the enduring bond of family she so dearly nurtured. Hilda was a true friend and confidante, known for her attentive ear and loyal heart. Her friendships were treasures, marked by a mutual respect and deep affection that only grew stronger over the years. She was the keeper of secrets and the source of comfort, a beacon of unwavering support to those fortunate enough to call her a friend. The Sheppard family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at D’Youville Senior Living for their compassionate care and kindness shown to Hilda in her final years. Their dedication and empathy provided great comfort during her transition. A celebration of Hilda's life will be held on April 22, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the Central Congregational Church, located at 1 Worthen Street, Chelmsford. Family and friends are warmly invited to gather in remembrance of a remarkable woman whose life was a testament to love, faith, and friendship. As we mourn the loss of Hilda Virginia (Detter) Sheppard, we also celebrate a life filled with grace, warmth, and an unyielding spirit. Her presence will be deeply missed, yet her legacy lives on in the hearts and memories of all who knew and loved her.
