In Loving Memory

Hilda Mae Murriel
August 15, 1940 — June 29, 2026
Hilda Mae Murriel, a beacon of love, wisdom, and service, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2026, in the embrace of her cherished family, at the age of 85. Born on August 15, 1940, in Baltimore, Maryland, Hilda was the beloved daughter of Elizabeth and Jack Williams. Her life was a testament to faith, family, and community, as she touched countless lives with her generosity, compassion, and unwavering kindness.
Her life's journey was marked by an enduring love story with her husband, Wilbur “Bill” Murriel, whom she met while teaching at Booker T. Washington. Together, they shared 57 wonderful years of marriage, filled with mutual respect, laughter, and a deep commitment to service. Although Bill preceded her in death, their legacy of love and unity remains a guiding light for their family.
Hilda's passion for communication and education led her to Morgan State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages. Her academic pursuits were further enriched by advanced graduate coursework in education, and she was once honored as a candidate for a Fulbright scholarship. Known affectionately as “Madame Cooke,” she dedicated over three decades to teaching French and Spanish in the Baltimore City Public School System. Her influence extended beyond the classroom as she continued to mentor at Morgan State University, Coppin State University, and McDonough Catholic School.
In her personal life, Hilda embraced joy and adventure. She was an avid bowler, participating in leagues such as the Wood Knockers and Inner-City Rollers, and she delighted in word games and lively Scrabble and pinochle matches. Her travels with family, especially to Venezuela, England, Paris, and Las Vegas, were cherished memories, as were her frequent trips to Dover Downs, where she reveled in the thrill of the casino.
Hilda’s legacy lives on through her daughters, Melinda and Carol; her son-in-law, Kevin; her granddaughters, Yvah and Kimberly; her devoted canine companion, Grady; and the many individuals whose lives she enriched. Her family and friends will forever celebrate her life by following her example to "be a blessing to others."
A service to honor Hilda’s remarkable life will be held on July 11, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Edward’s Roman Catholic Church, located at 901 Poplar Grove St., Baltimore, MD 21216. The family welcomes all who knew and loved Hilda to join in this celebration of her life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Hilda’s memory to organizations that continue her legacy of education and community service. Her spirit will continue to inspire and guide all who were fortunate enough to know her.
