Herbert "Herb" Mathews, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and mechanical brilliance. Born on August 2, 1937, in Baltimore, Maryland, Herb was a beacon of joy and positivity, known for his larger-than-life personality that could light up any room. Herb was the cherished son of the late Herbert and Addie Mathews, who instilled in him the values of hard work and kindness. He was predeceased by his brother, Cliff Mathews, with whom he shared a bond of brotherhood and friendship that stood the test of time. Herb's life was a testament to the power of passion and perseverance. He dedicated many years to Bethlehem Steel Sparrows Point, contributing significantly with his mechanical mind and engineering prowess. His commitment to service extended beyond his professional life as he proudly served in the Air Force Reserves. Herb's entrepreneurial spirit led him to successfully own and operate R & R Ties and White Marsh Storage, where his business acumen and dedication to quality were evident in every endeavor. In his personal life, Herb was an avid hunter and a vintage car enthusiast whose love for adventure took him across all the continental United States in his trusty RV. Whether tinkering in his garage in White Marsh or Naples, Florida, Herb always had a project or two that kept his inventive mind engaged and his hands busy. His love for solving engineering problems and building things from scratch was a testament to his ingenuity and creativity. Herb's heart was as vast as his interests. He leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory: his devoted son, Herbert (Matt) Mathews, and his wife, Candyce; his grandchildren, Maggie Brown and her husband Jordan, Graham Mathews, and Kelcey Trewin. He also leaves behind his stepchildren, Holly Fox and her husband David, and their children Alyssa Slater and her husband Mitchell, Caitlin Markowski and her husband Joseph and their child Peyton, and Matthew Bashforth and his wife Kristin and their children Jake and Cooper Bashforth. Each of them carries pieces of Herb's warmth, humor, and love with them, ensuring his legacy lives on through generations. Known for bringing humor and joy to all who knew him, Herb's infectious laughter and kind heart will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
