HERBERT (HiWay) LEE JONES

Herbert "HiWay" Lee Jones, a man of boundless energy and infectious spirit, left this world on August 4, 2026, just days shy of his 63rd birthday, after a brief illness. Born on August 9, 1963, in Grady, Alabama, Herbert was the cherished son of Mr. Isom Hall and Mrs. Hattie Jones, who preceded him in death. His life was marked by a profound love for family, friends, and his community. He received Christ at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. Herbert's life was a tapestry of dedication, hard work, and unwavering support for those around him. A proud graduate of Montgomery County High School in 1984, he embarked on a career that would span over three decades at Wiley Sanders Truck Lines in Troy, AL. As a furnace house operator and forklift driver, Herbert's commitment to excellence was evident in his 32 years of tireless service, often working the graveyard shift. He took great pride in mentoring new employees, guiding them with care and wisdom in a field known for its challenges. Beyond his professional life, Herbert was a passionate advocate for youth sports, serving as a beloved Little League baseball coach in Crenshaw, AL, and its surrounding counties. His leadership on the field led his teams to both area and state championships, a testament to his ability to inspire and nurture young talent. Herbert was a man of many interests, most notably his fervent support for the NFL Dallas Cowboys and the Alabama Crimson Tide football team. His friendly debates with Auburn fans were legendary, showcasing his playful yet passionate nature. Known for his larger-than-life personality, Herbert was indeed the life of the party. His confidence, charisma, and engaging presence left a lasting impression on everyone he met, as he truly never met a stranger. Herbert's love extended deeply to his family. He is survived by his devoted son, Demario (Shawann) Jones of Brundidge, AL, and his cherished grandchildren, Kaden Nasir Jones, Ja'Leah Deonshaya Jones, and Kaison Adur Jones. His siblings, Annie Jackson of Montgomery, AL; Patricia Jones of Atlanta, GA; Arthur (Sabrina) Jones, Eugene Jones, and Lee Andrew Jones of Ramer, AL; and Leon (Luretha) Sankey of Birmingham, AL, will forever hold his memory close to their hearts. Herbert's life was further enriched by his close friends, Vanessa Hall-Hibbler and Captain Lee Barnes, who stood by him through life's journey. Herbert's legacy is one of warmth, laughter, and an unwavering dedication to his family and community. Those who were fortunate enough to know him will remember him not only for his boisterous voice and quick wit but for the love and inspiration he gave so freely.
