Henry George Kulka
June 26, 1962 — April 16, 2026
It is with a profound sense of loss, yet a heart full of cherished memories, that we announce the passing of Henry George Kulka, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. Henry peacefully departed this world on April 16, 2026, at the age of 63, in the tender care of Cairns Base Hospital, surrounded by his dedicated doctors and nurse.
Born on June 26, 1962, at Cairns Base Hospital, Henry was the cherished son of George and Esther Kulka (nee Ross-Kelly). A proud Yalanji Warra and Kuku Nyungkal Warra man, he was deeply connected to his cultural roots and committed to preserving the legacy of his ancestors. Henry's upbringing in the rich tapestry of Cooktown, Weipa, and Mossman imbued him with a love for the land and a profound respect for his elders, whom he often visited at the Daintree River during his schooling years.
Henry's life was a tapestry of love and devotion, woven through his relationships and community endeavors. In 1982, he met Tracey Johnston, and in 1983, they were blessed with a daughter, Nicole. Later, in 1989, Henry's heart found a new home with Coralee, and their blended family grew to include Tish, Rachel, Glen, Karla, Hamish, Layla, Kassy, and Tahlia. Together, they nurtured a family built on love, resilience, and shared joy.
Henry's professional journey began early, working on a cane farm at the age of 15. This industrious spirit led him to the tobacco farms of Dimbulah and various other places, where he forged a living with hard work and integrity. Beyond his professional endeavors, Henry was an esteemed member of the Mossman Sharks, where he showcased his prowess as a football player, a passion that was paralleled only by his love for playing the guitar.
A man of cheerful disposition and humble demeanor, Henry's life was marked by a profound generosity and a commitment to uplifting others. He dedicated much of his time to assisting remote communities, including the Cooktown Gungarde Aboriginal Corporation and the Ang-Gnarra Corporation, among others. His work was not just a career but a calling, as he tirelessly shared his knowledge of his old people with his children, grandchildren, and extended family.
Henry's legacy is carried on by his surviving siblings, Warren, Geoffrey, Brian, Regan, Esther, and Lenore, as well as his 33 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, who will grow up hearing stories of his infectious laughter, endearing jokes, and the boundless love he had for his family.
Preceded in death by his parents, George and Esther, and his brother Errol, Henry's memory will forever remain a beacon of light and love for those who were fortunate enough to know him.
In celebrating Henry's life, we remember a man whose heart was as vast as the land he revered, whose laughter could light up the darkest room, and whose legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. May his spirit find eternal peace, and may we honor his memory by cherishing the bonds we hold dear, just as he did throughout his remarkable life.
