May 9, 1926 — May 3, 2026

It is with profound sadness, tempered by gratitude for a life well-lived, that we announce the passing of Helen Marie Fernette, who departed this world peacefully on May 3, 2026, just shy of her 100th birthday. Born on May 9, 1926, in Lansing, Iowa, Helen was a beacon of warmth and kindness, whose legacy will continue to shine brightly through the hearts she touched. Helen was the cherished daughter of Jennie and Arthur Gaulthier, growing up in a home filled with love and laughter alongside her sister, Mary Iseli, and brother, Donald Gaulthier. She carried the values of her upbringing throughout her life, steadfastly nurturing a spirit of generosity and compassion that defined her character. On October 14th,1952, in a year fondly remembered by her family, Helen, a devout catholic, married the love of her life, Francis Fernette at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church. Together, they built a home rich in love and hospitality, welcoming all with her warm smile and a hot meal. They were blessed with two daughters, Patricia and Cheryl, who were the heart of Helen's world. Her family continued to grow, and she was the proud grandmother of five grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and adoring great-grandmother to several great-grandchildren, each of whom she cherished deeply. Helen's professional life saw her dedicated to her work at an electronics plant in McGregor, Iowa, and later at the 3M Company in Prairie du Chien. Her colleagues remember her as a diligent worker with an unyielding work ethic, always ready to support and uplift those around her. In her leisure, Helen found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She was an avid fisherwoman, spending countless serene hours on the Mississippi River, and she nurtured her love for nature through the meticulous care of her yard and flowers. Her garden was a testament to her nurturing spirit, blooming vibrantly under her attentive watch. Above all else, Helen was known for her welcoming heart. Her home was a sanctuary for family and friends, a place of comfort where her presence brought peace and joy. Her legacy is one of love and generosity, a testament to a life lived with grace and kindness. Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband Francis in Sept. 2000. She also was predeceased by her sister Mary, her brother Donald, and her parents Jennie and Arthur. While we mourn their absence, we find solace in the thought of their joyous reunion. She is now currently survived by her dear friend, Victor Swenson. They enjoyed dancing and spending time together. A service to celebrate Helen's life will be held on May 9, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Family and friends are invited to gather and honor a life that was truly a blessing to all who knew her. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Thornton Manor Nursing Home in Lansing, Iowa, for the loving care and support they provided to Helen in her final years. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Helen’s memory to a charity of your choice, reflecting the generosity and compassion that she embodied throughout her life. Helen Marie Fernette will forever be remembered for her love, her unwavering kindness, and the profound impact she had on the lives of those she cherished. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of her family and friends, a shining example of a life well-lived.
