Helen E. Shortell

Helen E. Shortell, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, peacefully departed this world, leaving behind a legacy of love and devotion that will forever be cherished by her family and friends. Born on May 12, 1939, in Staten Island, New York, Helen was the beloved daughter of Frank and Helen Hunter. Her life was a tapestry woven with love, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to her family. Helen married the love of her life, Richard Thomas Shortell, on May 25, 1957, at St. Brigette's Catholic Church in New Jersey. Together, they shared 58 years of companionship and love, raising three wonderful children. She was a devoted partner, supporting Richard throughout his military career, traveling with him across the United States and Germany. Helen's strength and grace were a testament to her dedication as a wife and mother, making each new place they lived a warm and welcoming home. A talented homemaker, Helen had an innate ability to create beauty and comfort. Her gardens flourished under her tender care, boasting vibrant flowers and luscious vegetables. A gifted artisan, she created a variety of crafts, from wreaths to stained glass ornaments, each piece reflecting her artistic spirit. Helen's passion for collecting Hallmark ornaments, especially the Nostalgic Houses series, brought her immense joy. Her love for the New York Yankees was sparked by a memorable birthday gift, as a teenager, from Richard when they attended a game together, witnessing Mickey Mantle hit a home run—a cherished memory that stayed with her throughout her life. Helen's faith was an integral part of her life. She was actively involved in the Catholic Church, serving as a CCD teacher and director, sharing her knowledge and compassion with the community. Her generosity and kindness touched many lives, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her. She is survived by her loving children, Pauline Shortell Haswell (Michael), Richard Thomas Shortell II (Wendy), and Joan Shortell Uzzle (Joseph). Her legacy lives on through her six grandchildren, Emily Moe (Andrew), Joshua Haswell, Corey Haswell, Richard Shortell III, Tess Shortell, and Benjamin Shortell, as well as her three great-grandchildren, Stanley Summerhill, Sadie Moe, and Owen Moe. Helen is now reunited with her beloved husband, Richard, who predeceased her. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Gloria Hall for the compassion and care she provided to Helen in her later years, offering comfort and companionship that was deeply appreciated. In honor of Helen's life and in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a COPD Foundation. Helen's life was a beautiful journey of love, faith, and dedication. She will be dearly missed, but her spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know her.
