It is with heavy hearts and profound respect that we announce the passing of Hawthorne Reed, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Hawthorne peacefully left this world on June 27, 2026, at the age of 72, surrounded by the warmth of his home in Lowndes County, Alabama. Born on June 23, 1954, to the late Annie Givan-Reed and Willie Hawthorne Taylor, Hawthorne's life was a testament to love, service, and boundless generosity.
Hawthorne was raised in Lowndes County, where he graduated from Calhoun High School. Eager to serve his country, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps immediately after high school and bravely served in the Vietnam War in 1972. His courage and dedication during this time were reflective of his unwavering commitment to his country and fellow citizens.
After his military service, Hawthorne pursued higher education at Lazarus Academy in Maryland, where he earned a degree in cartography. His thirst for knowledge continued as he achieved a degree in seminary/theological studies in Alexander City, AL, reflecting his deep faith and desire to understand the spiritual dimensions of life.
For 39 years, Hawthorne worked as a cartographer in Macon and Bullock County, Alabama. His work was not just a career but a passion, and his meticulous attention to detail and dedication to his craft left a lasting imprint on the communities he served.
Hawthorne's life was enriched by his marriage to Neara Reed, whom he wed on November 21, 1981, in Union Springs, AL. Together, they shared 45 wonderful years, filled with laughter, love, and a shared commitment to family. They were blessed with a daughter, Allyson Reed Hightower, who, with her husband Eric Hightower Jr., brought immense joy to Hawthorne's life. Hawthorne cherished his role as a grandfather to his grandson, Eli Hightower, with whom he spent countless cherished moments.
Hawthorne was known for his remarkable ability to brighten any room with his charm and humor. His kindness and generosity extended beyond his family, touching the lives of everyone he met. He was a devoted member of several organizations, contributing his time and energy to causes close to his heart.
In his leisure time, Hawthorne delighted in the simple pleasures of life. He loved fishing, cherished family vacations, and was passionate about home renovation projects. His talent for turning a house into a home was an extension of his creative spirit and love for his family.
Hawthorne was predeceased by his parents, three sisters, and two brothers. He is survived by his loving wife Neara Reed, his cherished daughter Allyson Reed Hightower, son-in-law Eric Hightower Jr., and his adored grandson Eli Hightower. He also leaves behind his siblings, who will miss him dearly.
