Harvey Lee Gillis

It is with heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Harvey Lee Gillis, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. Harvey peacefully departed this world at his home on June 7, 2026, at the age of 93. Born on March 10, 1933, in the small town of Eldred, Illinois, Harvey was the cherished son of Eugene Gillis and Ruby Mae Pryor.
A graduate of White Hall High School, Class of 1951, Harvey embarked on a remarkable journey when he joined the U.S. Air Force. Serving his country with distinction from 1951 to 1973, he reached the esteemed rank of Senior Master Sergeant. Throughout his career, Harvey was stationed in diverse locations, including the Philippines, French Morocco, California, Japan, Massachusetts, Colorado, Canada, and Illinois. His dedication and service earned him four Air Force Commendation Medals, a testament to his unwavering commitment and excellence.
It was in French Morocco that Harvey met the love of his life, Arlette Marie Ortola. They were married on May 11, 1957, in Casablanca, a union that would span 58 joyous years. Together, they raised their son, Steven, and built a life filled with laughter, adventure, and love.
After retiring from the Air Force, Harvey transitioned to a career with Unisys Corporation, where he worked as an Information Technology Engineer for nearly two decades. Even in a new field, Harvey's dedication and work ethic were unwavering.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Harvey was a devoted member of the Freemasons for 66 years, proudly achieving the title of 32nd Degree Mason in 1966. His commitment to the values of brotherhood and service was evident in every aspect of his life.
Harvey's passion for family genealogy led him on many adventures, tracing the roots and stories of his ancestors. His meticulous research and travels connected the past with the present, creating a tapestry of family history that will be cherished for generations.
Known for his captivating storytelling, Harvey's kindness and generosity left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege to know him. His tales, filled with wisdom and humor, will be fondly remembered and cherished.
Harvey's legacy lives on through his son, Steven, and daughter-in-law, Rosanne; his grandchildren, Andrew (Sarah), Sadie-Evelyn and Morgan; and his great-grandchildren, Ruby and June; brothers Fred and George "Ed" and sister June. He is also survived by a multitude of friends who became family over the years. Harvey was predeceased by his parents, Eugene and Ruby, as well as his brothers, John and Howard "Dick" and sister, Faye.
